The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in a statement on Thursday, 6th September, says the Earth shaking at Abuja, could be as a result of Earth Tremor.
This is in response to multiple Earth Shaking which started on Tuesday, 4th September in Abuja, resulting in panic by residents.
FEMA says –
– that the possible cause of the earth shaking might be as a result of Earth Tremor,
– that it is a sign of seismic movement within the earth. This is caused by sudden breaks along a fault line which results in sudden release of energy that makes the ground to shake,
– It is caused by stress in underground rocks and may be due to rock blasting an mining activities in an area.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki and some Nigerians have voiced for the active-standby by FEMA for any emergency.
According to Bukola Saraki, in a tweet, “At this time, it is important that @NEMANigeria, FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and all emergency services be on high alert to prevent the loss of lives and property.”
“This is the 3rd day in a row we have felt strong earth vibrations/ tremors here in Katampe, Abuja. This is very scary. And this notice by FEMA doesn’t in anyway calm the mind at all.” – Uche Josephat.
As part of it protection job and to educate the public, the FEMA have released safety tips on what to do when Shaking Occurs –
– stay calm and do not panic,
– if you stay in a building, locate a safe room, drop down and take cover under desks or tables and hold on tight to it. You should stay away from windows and objects that may fall,
– if you are outdoor, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees and powerlines,
– if you are in a car, slow down and drive to a clear place, stay in the car until the shaking stops.
In conclusion, the FEMA tells Nigerians to stay calm as Nigeria is not in earthquake zone.
