Goodluck Jonathan had never met Attahiru Jega prior to his appointment – Professor Onigbinde

Professor Akinyemi Onigbinde, a political philosophy professor from Ogun state has voiced his displeasure with the recent 2023 general elections.

In his view, Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s selection as the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was not based on moral propriety.

Controversy marred the 2023 presidential elections, in which the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, emerged the winner with approximately eight (8) million votes.

While commenting on the outcome of the election, Professor Onigbinde stated that President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Professor Jega as INEC Chairman based on merit and integrity, without meeting or knowing him prior to his appointment.

However, President Muhammadu Buhari picked someone from his tribe (Fulani) to be the chairman, Prof. Onigbinde lamented.

He said – “(Goodluck) Jonathan never met Attahiru Jega before he appointed him. He wanted somebody with some level of integrity to head the commission.

“When Jega left, nobody expected Buhari to pick from his Fulani ethnic group. But he did it, just like he did with all the service chiefs.

It was an attempt to hatch the agenda.”
