2023: APC should not deceive itself to defeat itself

APC wants PDP, LP to offer solutions to Nigeria’s problems

With APC being in power, the number of it’s Governors, Senators, members of House of Representatives, the caliber of people in APC, the number of defections into it’s fold 2023 is sure for APC unless the party mismanages itself to defeat itself. All possibilities of either correcting itself or fighting itself to defeat itself to the opposition are open to APC ahead of 2023.

Recently, President Muhammadu Buhari warned members and leadership of the party, of what may happen if they fail to close ranks and project the party in good light ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The President who stressed the need for our members of the ruling All Progressives Congress to put an end to the current internal wrangling to enable the party to retain power in 2023, said without unity of purpose among the leaders, especially, and other party members, APC might lose elections to the opposition. A clear need to harmonize the dreams and aspirations of the leaders of our party with that of other members and the grassroots support base is clearly implied.

The President spoke during an interview with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA). He said the opposition can take over power from the APC in the 2023 general elections if the party fails to agree on some very thorny issues plaguing it, and there are many, within a reasonable time.

In my thinking some of the grave mistakes APC have made over time include but not limited to the following: Not harmonizing it’s major blocks of CPC, ACN, ANPP, APGA and nPDP since after the merger, not taking a serious and sincere steps at reconciliation of it’s aggrieved members since after merger, poor reward system that is backstepping the zeal and vigour of it’s sacrificial footsoldiers, wholesome handing of the party’s structures to Governors and money bags in violation of its constitution and principles of internal democracy, not ensuring that all organs of it’s party like BoT, Caucuses, (exco from top to bottom) work to checkmate the arrogance of some of those that have led and are still leading the party, exclusivity in conduct of some of it’s membership registration/revalidation, congresses and primaries that is often geared towards favourig a certain cabal, not ensuring a digitalized membership register more for manipulative reasons, periodic disregard of its own constitution etc.

Though it is my opinion that our recently announced APC National Convention is quite belated, it is a sure way for the party to get it’s house in order by ensuring wide range of consultation and inclusion of all stakeholders including it’s youths and women.

A philosopher Prof Asouzu held that mutuality/complementarity is only assured when the pursuit of individual’s interest is an inclusion of all interest of relevant stakeholders. He also warns of the impending boomerang and doom that visits a group when the pursuits of individual’s interest is rather the exclusion of the interest of other relevant stakeholders.

It is my view that President Buhari must have noticed existence of palpable internal wrangling in our party that may cost it 2023 victory, hence his warnings that the party must close it’s ranks if interested in remaining in power.

As APC Convention grows close APC must be careful to stop all forms of exclusivity and control of the party by a certain cabal that is not even rooted amongst major Stakehholders. Let me state that the Anti-convention advocates are increasing in number with plans to scuttle all plans towards any Convention. The Anti-Convention members of APC have expanded to include those who wanted to extend the APC Convention to have a chance to merge and superintend the conduct of both the Presidential Primaries and the National Convention and the aggrieved members who are in various courts to stop the Convention because of fear of exclusivity and possible hijack of the party ahead of 2023.

The Anti-convention group are too powerful to be ignored, it is only entrenchent of the principles of party inclusion all relevant interest and strict compliance with it’s Constitution can save the party.

Obviously APC have turbulent times ahead with attempts by various interest groups to either hijack the party or destroy it by capitalizing on it’s alleged violations of it’s constitution. These attempts are already seen in various court cases across the Nation. Some Anti-Convention groups will do all to frustrate the party unless there’s a deliberate attempt at a transparent, inclusive, grassroots-oriented plans in the events leading to Convention. Can greed, power play, impunity and attempts by a certain cabal to exclude others in the choice of APC candidates for 2023 allow for the survival of APC?
