Halsey has stated that having abortion “saved” her life prior to becoming pregnant with son, Ender.
The American singer, who uses the pronoun “they/their,” revealed this in an open letter to Vogue.
Before welcoming son Ender last July, the 27-year-old reflected on their’ struggle to maintain a pregnancy,’ and rewrote their will as they approached their due date due to fears that they wouldn’t survive.
Halsey wrote;
‘I miscarried three times before turning 24. It seemed cruel irony that I could get pregnant easily but struggled to keep a pregnancy going.
‘One of my miscarriages required “aftercare,” which was a polite way of saying that I would need an abortion because my body couldn’t terminate the pregnancy completely on its own and I would risk developing sepsis if I didn’t get medical help.

‘I cried during this procedure. I was terrified for myself and helpless. I was desperate to get rid of the pregnancy that was endangering my life.’
The singer explained that they remembered this moment while giving birth to Ender, when the world went ’silent’ around them and they felt the ‘euphoria of chosen motherhood’ after ‘years of blood, sweat, and tears.’
Despite their previous difficulties, the Grammy winner explained that they were prepared for any eventuality in the delivery room.

‘During my third trimester of pregnancy, I rewrote my will. I was expecting the worst based on my previous experiences.
‘I gave detailed instructions regarding the donation of my organs should I die or be declared brain-dead, which meant that if my heart continued to beat but my brain was no longer functioning, the state would have permission to cut into my warm and still flush flesh and take my organs to save other people’s lives.
‘How ironic that while my own heart would be nothing more than involuntary movements on an operating table, a beating heart in my womb could mean I couldn’t consent.’

Halsey concluded the letter by stating that they have been asked whether their position on abortion has changed as a result of their health scares.

They also stated;
‘The answer is emphatically no. ‘In fact, I’ve never felt more strongly about it,’ they said. ‘My abortion saved my life and allowed my son to live.’ Every person has the right to choose when, if, and how they have this potentially life-changing experience. I’m going to fight with one arm while holding my son in the other.’
The US Supreme Court ended constitutional protections for people seeking legal abortions last month, which means that individual states can now decide how to regulate terminations.
