About the Blood-red Alkaline Lake in Kapedo, Turkana

Located in the city of Kapedo, the Eastern part of Turkana is a Blood-Red alkaline lake that dries while it salinity increases.

 

The warm water’s high salt concentration makes what’s left of the lake a prime breeisng ground for Dunaliella algae, which turns the water blood-red.

Off the beaten path, there’s a multitude of natural wonders in this remote northern part of Kenya, that are just out of the ordinary.

 

The color of the lake is characterized by intense evaporation rate, which occurs often occur during dry season, salinity Leve increase to the point that salt loving micro-organism begin to strive for their survival, organism like halophiles including cyanobacterial who often make their food through the process of photosynthesis as plant do, the red accessory photosynthesizing pigment of the cyanobacterial then produces the deep red colour of the open water of the lake and the orange colour of the shallow part of the lake .

About the Blood-red Alkaline Lake in Kapedo, Turkana

 

 

It is also believed that a person can not swim in this lake due to it high level of sanity, also neither has there been any history of other living organism aside the habitat microorganism been able to reside in the water.

 

The alkaline salt crust on the surface of the lake is also often coloured of pink or red by the salt loving microorganism who habitat the lake.
