ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE OYO STATE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

ACHIEVEMENT RECORD OF THE OYO STATE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY – MAY 2019 – MAY 2020, UNDER GOV. SEYI MAKINDE

 

1. The educational budget for the State was raised to 22.3% in 2020.

 

2. Access to Quality Education at Primary and Secondary Levels for all Eligible Oyo State Children was increased by 11% through the:
i. Scraping of all school levies, including the N1,000.00 termly education levy.
ii. Free conduct of State examinations such as placement/screening exercise examination for Admission into JSS 1.
iii. Distribution of free Report cards to Public Secondary School students across.

iv. Distribution of textbooks to students in Public Secondary Schools across the State.

v. Distribution of 2,782,806 customised notebooks to students in Public Secondary Schools.

vi. Release of fund for the conduct of 2019 Common Entrance Examination into the five (5) Technical Colleges free for all candidates.



3. The State Government distributed free Compendium to all SS3 Private Schools’ Students across the State.

 

4. 10% School Fees reduction at Emmanuel Alayande College of Education Oyo and College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora.

 

5. 120 Law students were given N500,000.00 each as scholarship.

 

6. Running grants was given to all Public Secondary Schools for effective school management.

 

7. The State Government collaborated with Alumni Association to support individual schools for all-round development of schools. This is evidenced in some intervention carried out by old Students’ Association of Schools like Government College Apata, Bishop Phillips Academy, Ibadan, African Church Grammar Schools, Apata, and Anwarul-Islam Grammar Schools, Eleyele, Ibadan, Oranyan Grammar School, Oyo etc.

 

8. The State also collaborated with International donors, development partners and private organisations such as World Bank, UNICEF, UNESCO in the development of education sector in the State in the areas BESDA, Conduct of Annual School Census (ASC).

 

9. Teacher’s quality was also improved through adequate training and development programme. TESCOM organised training for the Public Secondary School Principals and Vice-Principals in the six educational zones in November/December 2019 while series of ICT Training was also held for ICT teachers in the State’s Public Secondary Schools.



10. The renovation of classrooms was embarked upon by the State Education Trust Fund (OYETF) and State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). For example:

(a) A block of 3 Classrooms was completed at French Centre Iyagankun,

(b) Rehabilitation of 2 classrooms and offices and construction of a laboratory at Government Technical College, Saki.

(c) Construction of bricks and block laying workshop; examination hall and rehabilitation of a block of 6 classrooms ICT building at GTC, Ogbomoso.

(d) Construction of drawing studio at Government Technical College, ISEYIN

(e) Renovation of a block 6 classrooms and 5 classrooms with offices at St. Joseph, Awe and

(f) Renovation of 6 classrooms at Community High School, Ilora.

(g) School renovations in 22 Local Government.

(h) 12 Classrooms of Model School at Anwar-ul-Islam Basic School, Ipapo, Itesiwaju Local Government. The school is one of the 22 Model Schools completed by this administration.

(i) The government has also commenced renovation of 60 classrooms and construction of 30 new classrooms which are to be completed within 4 weeks.

 

The State government set a new Academic Performance Standard through the provision of free extra-moral coaching classes for the students most especially SS3 Students. Free JAMB Classes was also organised for the SS3 students. This has started yielding positive result as evidenced in the following:

i. The State’s representative at the year 2020, 774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award Science competition held at the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Abuja on 1st to 3rd March 2020 Master Adewusi Hepzibah of Oladipo Alayande School of Science, Oke Bola, Ibadan came 7th position out of 36 States and FCT that participated;

ii. The State’s representatives at the National Expo 2020 Science project exhibition held at Eagle Square, Abuja in March 2020. Ibrahim Sodiq and Ebere Victor of Wesley College of Science, Elekuro, Ibadan and Oladipo Alayande School of Science, Oke Bola, Ibadan respectively came 5th position out of 36 States of the Federation and FCT.



11. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities were provided in the government’s schools (Secondary and Tertiary). Examples are the Interactive Boards, Projectors and Computers in the Tertiary Institutions. In addition, the following were enjoyed by the tertiary institutions:

i. Special release of N500m Naira was also made to LAUTECH for sustainability.

ii. N200m Naira was released to The Polytechnic, Ibadan for Accreditation of 15 programs
iii. Sustenance of 100% monthly subvention to all the State-owned Tertiary Institutions.

 

12. The State government has been able to sustain the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme and is also ready to scale up the programme to accommodate Basic 4-6 Pupils.

 

13. The HCES&T sensitised all the stakeholders on the need to ensure judicious use of available resources to meet stakeholders’ expectations of the school system in the State.

 

14. Establishment of Government Technical College (Junior) in Technical College, Ogbomoso to serve as a feeder for Colleges at Ibadan, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Iseyin and Saki.

 

15. One Thousand (1,000) out of school children, school leavers and women on the acquisition of skills were trained for self- reliance in the Brick making, Block making, Pasteries, Tie and Dye and Painting.



16. The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Ibarapa Polytechnic and Oke-Ogun Polytechnic have established vocational skills and entrepreneurial study centres that are both academic and business-oriented.

 

17. The Ministry has functioning Education Management Information System (EMIS) Unit that is managing the Ministry’s website ( www.oysgedu.ng ) through which Education in the Emergency programme of the State Government during the COVID-19 Pandemic period was executed, including School On The Air Programs and Up to 500MB of free Airtel Data. Through the website, the students were able to access the e-library, e-school, CBT, real-time online students’ records, teacher’s information and parent’s information. The State EMIS has also been able to:

i. Provide a robust Annual School Census (ASC) Reports for the State, and this has fetched the State opportunities to be selected for the BESDA AND GPE2 Programmes.

(ii) United Nations Children’s Fund has recognised the pacesetting status of the State’s EMIS unit organised a training for all other Southwest States in the Country to learn from the State on how to conduct ASC and how to implement National Policy on ICT in Education.

(iii) Further Development of EMIS UNIT is on-going.

 

18. The ongoing teachers’ recruitment exercise is targeted at reducing the high rate of Pupil/Teacher ratio in the State.

 

19. The Ministry’s field officers have been able to monitor Private Schools to ensure their compliance with the State Government policies in the establishment of Private Schools across the State.

 

20. The State Government through the Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education (AANFE) has been able to provide second chance opportunities for adults and youth learners by increasing the learning centres from one (1) to five (5) per Local Government. Also, 34 Adult Educators are to be recruited for the Agency.



21. In other to ensure even spread of development, renovation of school buildings is taking place in 22 Local Government Areas including the remotest part of the State. In all 60 Classrooms are undergoing renovation while 30 new classrooms are being constructed.

 

22. Provision of essential facilities and subvention to Special Homes accommodating Special needs students/pupils. The State Government has also appointed a Special Adviser to His Excellency on Special need Children/ Citizens of the State.

 

23. Adherence to NERDC Curriculum at all levels of education is adequately ensured.
