Here is a simple narrative by Temi Badmus on how diabetes patients will increase to 553 Million in Africa by 2045 if the outlined warnings are not taken seriously.
Today is World Diabetes Day, and I could not hold but write; I definitely do know that if our eating habit and routine are not intentional, then there will be no way out of this skyrocket increase in diabetes ailment the world will face.
The world statistic has shown that by 2045, Diabetes will increase to 700 Million, with Africa having 79%, then you may need to sit down and have a rethink about all that sugar you are fond of consuming.
In 2019, approximately 463 million adults (20-79 years) were living with diabetes; by 2045 this will rise to 700 million. The proportion of people with type 2 diabetes is increasing in most countries – 79% of adults with diabetes were living in low and middle-income countries; one can say the 54 African countries have the largest number of people living with diabetes.
Let come to Africa, the consumption of carbonated drinks, mostly sweetened with raw sugar is a daily habit in most sub-Saharan African countries.
According to statistics, in 2019, we have 19 million adults (20-79) living with diabetes; this figure were based on testing, which of course you can bear witness with that about 10% do not even have access to test, about 5% ain’t aware they are living with diabetes and also about 5% do not have an idea of what diabetes is.
According to the result from a researcher, one soft drink a day increases Type 2 diabetes risk by a fifth. In a warning through The Independent, reporting on an European study that has examined the relationship between type 2 diabetes and sugary drinks states that – “one of the largest of its kind – found strong links between sugary drink consumption and an increase in a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It attempted to assess the potential effects of various soft drinks on diabetes risk, including:
Africans are the largest consumers of all of these drinks, let me come down a little bit. Nigeria, an Africa country where I resides is comprised of about 200 million occupants and I can categorically say close to 100 Million people consume carbonated sweetened drinks on a daily basis, about 50 Million of them abuse the consumption of all this carbonated sweetened drinks.
An analytical statistics shows that by 2045, the world will be having about 700 Million diabetes patients, while out of this 700 Million , 533 Million will be from Africa.
Note that $9.5 billion was spent on healthcare for people with diabetes in 2019—less than 1% of the total global expenditure on diabetes. So every time I wonder how diabetes in Africa can be cared for if it’s really this expensive.
I have heard people say diabetes isn’t that serious, very true.
I have heard people say diabetes is worse than most diseases, I agree with this but how do we get out of here?
