Another Tanker Accident in Onitsha but Government at Alert

Another Tanker accident happened at Onitsha, Anambra state on Thursday, 31st October but this time the Government was alert and most importantly there was no spillage.

The SSA Office to the Governor of Anambra State on Nupeng Petroleum and Union Matters has also appealed to Ndi Anambra to “discard rumors making the rounds about another petrol tanker inferno in Onitsha”, on Thursday.

The tanker was loaded with 33,000 litres of PMS according to its driver, had a break failure and ended up in the huge gutter infront of Oando filling Station along Onitsha/Enugu expressway.

“There was no spill of petroleum products because the truck had a foreign manhole which makes it difficult or near impossible for petroleum product to spill when such accident occur,” says SSA, Hon. Peter Nwosu

The Men of the Anambra State Fire Service after getting the call, got there in no time with other key stake holders and did the needful.

What might have been another ugly incident was promptly averted, so there was no inferno as the rumor says.

More so, to reposition the Fire and rescue services into a proactive services, the Governor, Willie Obiano, has directed a number of measures:

  • more fire trucks acquired.
  • Approval for more men to be recruited into the service.
  • Pay and allowances of Fire Service personnel increased
  • A panel to investigate the recent fire incident ongoing. Panel will determine amongst other reasons the people affected and recommendations for compensation made.

The Willie Obiano administration has also declared zero tolerance for any form of disaster in the state.
