APC dead with Ahmed Lawan as consensus candidate – Kperogi

A media scholar and activist, Farooq Kperogi has said the All Progressives Congress, APC, would be officially dead if the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan emerges as consensus candidate for the 2023 Presidential election as declared by the ruling party’s national chairman, Sen Abdullahi Adamu.

Adamu announced Lawan as APC consensus presidential candidate at the meeting of the National Working Committee, NWC, on Monday, in Abuja.

However, some party stalwarts of the NWC, opposed the idea and insisted that other Presidential aspirants which include the national leader, Bola Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi and Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi must be allowed to contest the primary election at tomorrow’s convention scheduled at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

Adamu’s adoption of Lawan as consensus candidate is against the position of 11 APC Northern governors who endorsed that power must shift to the South after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.

However, Adamu told the NWC that he arrived at the choice of Lawan after consultation with President Buhari.

Reacting to the development, Kperogi said if that move holds, the fight for office of the President is going to be between the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party fielding former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, respectively.

Kperogi disclosed this on his Twitter page on Monday.

He tweeted: “Several newspapers, including Tinubu’s paper, have reported APC chairman Adamu as saying that Ahmed Lawan is APC’s consensus candidate! If this decision holds, APC would officially be a dead party. The 2023 election would be between PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi.”
