Lagos, Nigeria – In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Nigerian professional athlete and philanthropist; Evelyn Akhator through her ‘Benny A Foundation’ launched a charity initiative to provide and contribute significantly to the lives of Nigerians in May of 2020.
As part of a keen inspiration to reward her mum’s doggedness and commitment in making sure her dream of playing basketball came to fruition, Akhator said: “It has actually been my passion to really help people, but when my mum passed away from a tragic road accident, I felt the need to get a foundation under her name.”
The ‘Benny A Foundation’ comprises of community service and charity, with a focus on girl-child trafficking, community service to create awareness for road accidents and creating basketball camps to give back to young female hopefuls.
The initiative kicked off its first charity cause with a food drive that provided relief items including convenience food, beverages, and groceries distributed to individuals and residents in Lagos State.
With support from colleagues and well-meaning Nigerians, the food drive had in attendance- beach soccer star Abu Azeez, Super Falcons defender, Onome Ebi, entertainment entrepreneur -Ubi Franklin amongst others.
Having displayed her commitment to giving back and encouraging community development and service, the Benny A Foundation will continue in its stead of extending the hands of support to individuals across the country.
Evelyn Akhator currently plays for the Nigerian Women’s National Basketball Team; “D Tigeress” where she co-captained the team to its first Women’s World Cup and will be representing Nigeria alongside her team at the Tokyo Olympics coming up in 2021.
