A bridge linking Nigeria and Benin Republic in Chikanda, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, has collapsed following a downpour that lasted for several hours.

The international bridge was constructed in 2010 but the collapse was said to have paralysed socio-economic activities between the two countries along the border axis, Daily Trust reports.

A resident of Yashikira, a close town to the boarder, Mallam Lafia Gunu, said the situation was worrisome as his mother, Hajia Halima Lafia, who travelled to Benin Republic was now stranded due to the collapsed bridge.

He appealed to the authorities to quickly repair the bridge and provide an alternative route for commuters.
Some commuters said they demanded the quick intervention of both countries in the interest of sustainable business activities.

The Emir of Yashikira, Alhaji Umar Usman Seriki called on the Federal Ministry of Works, the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and the Kwara State Government to, as a matter of urgency, come to the aid of those affected.

Speaking on the development, the Federal Controller of Works, North Central, Engr Kayode Ibrahim, said the agency had already embarked on an assessment trip to ascertain the level of damage and find a temporary solution.

Ibrahim said the outcome of the visit would determine the next line of action.

He however assured residents that an immediate solution would be provided because of the economic importance of the bridge to the two West African countries.
