CARE FOR THE EYES & WHEN CHILDREN SHOULD CHECKUP

Good vision helps to perform at top performance at different works of life….it is paramount to take care of the eyes as they are the windows to your entire body and mind.

I’d be giving some basic points to enlighten us on how to care for this delicate structure.

1.  A regular eye exam
The emphasis of regular eye check is essentials for maintaining eye health especially when it comes to conditions that present without symptoms such as glaucoma also referred to as the silent thief of sight or conditions which come with little or no symptoms such as refractive errors(myopia e.t.c) this conditions sometimes are only discovered in the clinic after comprehensive eye exams so we should all endeavor to have regular check ups at least twice a year.

2.  Eating balanced diet
Foods rich in vitamins and minerals are so important for eye health. Fruits, vegetables and supplements containing vitamin A and antioxidants are important in maintaining the eye at a healthy level they prevent diseases that may affect the eye and keep our vision at optimal levels.

3. Exercise
Generally a good workout increases blood flow to the body and increases the strength of the immune system, The eye requires good amount of blood to function and fight off pathogens that cause disorders.

4.  Wash your hands
Your hands are used most times of the day, opening door knobs, exchanging handshakes and many other activities expose the hands to many pathogens lying around and this pathogens could easily be spread to the eye and cause many disastrous complications…its best we avoid this by washing our hands regularly.

5. Smoking
Many researchers have shown that smoking causes debilitating eye conditions such as cataracts which cloud the eye and reduces vision. Smoking should be avoided apart from eye condition it could lead to heart problems and diabetes.

6. Use of Sunglasses
The sun emits high amount of ultraviolet light which in excess is not healthy for the eyes, it could cause cataract, ptergium which are vascular triangular shape growths on the eye, melanomas and carcinomas(cancers), so it’s best we at most times especially during the point where the sun is highest between 11am and 3pm, we should endeavour to always put on sunglasses or ultraviolet blocking lenses.

7. Devices and blue light
Most of our visual display devices such as phones, tablets and televisions emit blue Rays and blue Rays from the time of stone age where we didn’t have such devices as we do now our ancestors differentiated days from night with the blue colour of the sky this allowed them to know when it’s time to work when the sky is blue…so this trait has been passed down to us and with the emission of this blue Rays they still disrupt our brain to stay awake and this affect our eyes in many detrimental ways.

And lastly, Our children, many times questions are asked when should children get their first eye checkup.

To answer that question children can have their first comprehensive eye exams at 6months of age and care should be take care during pregnancy to avoid infections and during birth the canals and mode of delivery such as forceps delivery should be put into account to avoid infecting the baby at an early stage.
