Aircraft tyres, like any other rubber product, are sometimes affected by sunlight, extreme weather conditions and wide range of factors. Most modern airlines have at one time or the other, suffered tyre burst mishaps during takeoff or landing.

 

However, Airline tyre burst occurrence is not a sign of incompetence or compromise of air safety standards. As a matter of fact, most of these airlines have continued to wax stronger and remain leading air carriers in the global aviation sector.

 

GLOBAL CASES OF AIRLINES TYRE MISHAPS.

MALAYSIA AIRLINE
In October 22 2018, a Malaysia Airlines flight MH192 from Kuala Lumpur to Bangalore was seen at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang with 166 people on board turning back and landing safely at Kuala Lumpur airport early on Monday because one of the tires on its main landing gear burst during takeoff. Malaysia Airlines (MAS) said tire debris was noticed on the runway at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 16 minutes after the plane had taken off for Bangalore. The captain of the Boeing 737-800, carrying 159 passengers and seven crew, was alerted immediately and airport fire rescue services were deployed. The jet landed safely. The Flight MH192 was rescheduled for a later date.



ETIHAD AIRWAYS.
In July 31 2017, Etihad Airways flight EY 204 had a tyre deflated after arrival on the main runway,” the official said. The airline said in a statement that “all passengers and crew are fine”, and it was “assisting guests who may be impacted by the delay of the outbound flight and advising them of any subsequent changes to their travel plans.

AIR CANADA
In July 18, 2017 Scores of travellers were caught up in delays of more than seven hours after Air Canada Rouge Flight AC1925 was forced to make an emergency landing on Monday afternoon, local time, The Sun reported. The Toronto-bound plane had to circle in the sky to burn fuel during the midair emergency before touching down.

AIR INDIA
June 9, 2017 An Air India flight from Delhi with 134 passengers on board suffered a tyre burst while landing at the Jammu airport today. AI 821 took off from New Delhi at 11 am and as it was landing at Jammu airport at 12.15 pm, when the aircraft suffered tyre burst and overshot the runway before coming to a halt at the end of the strip. Four of its tyres burst, an official said.

LUFTHANSA AIRWAYS
In May 13, 2016, a Lufthansa Arbus A330-300, registered D-AIKR performing flight LH764 from Munich t Mumbai with 163 on board, landed on Mumbai’s runway 27 at 2253L (1723Z) but burst both aft left and right main gear tyres (4 in total) and become disables on the runway near taxiway S7, approximately 1830 meter/6000 feet past the runway threshold. 4 tyres in total were affected and airplane became disabled on the runway. Emergency services reported they were alerted after the aircraft had landed. The airline reported there was no problem prior to touch down. The return flight LH-765 was cancelled, the passengers were taken to hotels.

HAWAI AIRWAYS
In July 18 2016, A Hawaiian Airlines plane made an emergency landing in Tokyo early on Monday morning, bursting tyres and forcing the closure of one runway and the cancellation of several other flights. The Flight HA458, which departed from Tokyo’s Haneda airport around midnight for Honolulu, returned to Japan after hydraulic system alarm, according to the NHK.
The Airbus 330 made an emergency landing at one of the runways at Haneda around 0130 LT. None of the 293 passengers and crew members were injured. Eight of the jet’s 10 tyres burst as it landed, with some oil leaking onto the runway.

 

KENYAN AIRWAYS
September 20 2016, A Kenyan Airways vessel yesterday burst its tyres as it landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya. The aircraft, KQ415 was from Entebbe Airport in Uganda. This came after Kenya Airways flight KQ41 from Entebbe reported a tyre burst as it landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The plane caused a two-hour disruption of traffic at the airport.
The airline said in statement that all guests were disembarked and there were no injuries.
