Certificates, No Longer Criteria for Employment – Abiola Odetola

The Special Assistant to the Ogun State Governor on Job Creation and Youth Empowerment Mr. Abiola Odetola has emphasized that with the trends in the 21st century labour market, certificates alone is no longer a criteria or guarantee for getting employed in Nigeria but rather the value and soft skills you can add to the organization.

 

Odetola made this known at the end of the 3-days employability training program organized by the State government In collaboration with German International Cooperation, Skills Development for Youth Empowerment GIZ_SKYE for over 600 final year students of 3 various Institutions in the State.

The training which include, Writing of Resumes and C.V, Job alert and matching, writing of cover letters, which simultaneously took place at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-iwoye, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta respectively.


Odetola, in a statement signed by his Media Aide, Mrs. Oluwakemi Ogungbade, explained that the government is interested in developing the human capital resources at its disposal by imparting the needed knowledge that will have a great and positive impact on the future of the state and the country at large.

 

He said it’s become imperative in providing soft skills that would give an edge to the youths in the state over their contemporaries from other states, saying that once they have imparted with these skills, they would be useful for themselves in the future.

 

In his keynote address, Junior Advisor GIZ_SKYE, Mr Godwin Obhiyeghobu noted that its Organization is interested in skills development for youth which would differentiate them from other candidates that apply for the same job or position.


In his lecture, the Head of Human Resources, Rovedana Consulting firm, Mr Abel Egbemhumghe, noted that in applying for a job, effective communication is key, saying that applicants must have information about the organization, have details on the desired qualification of applicants and description of the responsibilities involved in the role.

In his reaction, the Acting Rector, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Dr Adeoye Odedeji noted that the training was crucial for the lives of the youth since the life we live in requires life long and endless education which would give them extra skills required to adjust and fit in to the changing environment.

 

C.V review clinic and presentation of certificate of participation were part of the program.
