Chioma Uzodinma Democracy Day Message to Nigerians
As we mark our Democracy Day today, it’s pertinent that we reaffirm our beliefs in all democratic principles – belief in freedom, justice and equity. When the military handed over to civilians to begin our march into uninterrupted democracy in 1999, many never thought that it would last this long. Here we are today, 21 years later of uninterrupted democracy.
It has been an interesting 21 years; not rosy, yet not thorny. We have continued to weather the storm and with each dispensation our democracy and institutions get stronger. We are not yet there, but we are making progress.
I salute the women and men who fought tirelessly for the democracy we enjoy today, especially those who lost their lives. I remember, the heroine, Kudirat Abiola who martyred for our democracy and a host of others.
As we mark the day, take a minute to remember everyone who fought for our democracy and the lives lost so we can have the democracy we enjoy today. I understand that we are not where we are meant to be but it’s a journey, not a destination. Together, with more determination and patriotism we can make our democracy work for us all.
Happy Democracy Day Imolites & Nigeria!
