Covid-19: School Should be put on hold – Ohore to Adefisayo

Read statement below –

“I woke up to the news of the re-opening of schools amidst the continuous rise of Covid-19 in our society especially Lagos -State. According to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control(NCDC) as at January 16th, the total number of confirmed cases are 107,345 in which Lagos-State has 39,262 cases.

“The rise in the second wave of coronavirus has resulted to the swift increase of this virus. How would a responsible government direct its citizen to register their National Identification card via the National IdentIty Management Commission when they know more people will be infected with the virus.

“For the third week in a row over 4 million new cases were reported globally, and new deaths increased by 3% to 76, 000. This brings the cumulative numbers to over 83 million reported cases and over 1.8 million deaths globally since the start of the pandemic. Recent reports of different variants of SARS-CoV-2 have raised concern about and interest in the impact of viral changes.

“Lagos -State released Red Zones of Coronavirus recently in which low in -come communities like Mushin, Surulere, Ajeromi, Amuwo-Odofin and Eti-Osa are at high risks.

“Why do we want to endanger the lives of our children? How do you want to tell Yusuf a students at Jibowu Comprehensive High School were they have over 60 students in a class without no ventilation that he should keep social distance? How do you tell Sharon that she should not hug her class mate when even the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 said at least 732 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) batch B, have tested positive for COVID-19 (Premium Times). How many public schools in Lagos-State does have a running water system? We all know that our schools will only observe the rules on the first day of resumption after then nobody cares.

“Ma, we are playing with a TIME-BOMB if we should allow students resume schools at this tense period expect if the government have not been truthful with the NCDC report.

“Ma, I have been privileged to pay a courtesy visit to your office and i once remembered you honored my invitation at a drug abuse conference I organize at Yaba College of Technology, Yaba ,Lagos 2019 and I know how kin you are towards the well being of students in Lagos-State.

“As an SDG Advocate for Goal 4, I will want to employ you that schools should be put on hold for now pending the control of the virus.

Amb. Ohore Emmanuel U
