In the real sense of it, democracy goes beyond establishing political parties, conducting general elections and having an elected government in power.

It is a process that lasts for a very long time because it involves efficient and effective participation of citizens in determining policies and decisions which affect their lives at all levels and at all times. It involves the responsiveness of government to the needs and aspirations of citizens.

Democracy is based on the ability of a nation to provide channels for discussions, consultations, mobilization and propaganda. According to the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, “Good governance is ensuring respect for human rights and the rule of law; strengthening democracy; promoting transparency and capacity in public administration.”

Democracy and good governance are two inseparable agents whose existence depend on each other. This is because a good democratic environment breeds good governance such as accountability and transparency on the part of government.

In line with this, a frontline governorship aspirant in the forthcoming polls in Anambra State (2021) DR GODWIN MADUKA has this to say concerning his vision on democracy and good governance for Ndi Anambra State.

In his exact words, “I will ensure that all political party representatives are engaged in the decision making processes and governance. Every inter party barrier that will hinder development and progress in the state will be diplomatically dealt with in other to enhance unity of purpose
irrespective of party affiliations in the state.

Our administration will ensure that intimidation of the populace by political party stakeholders is checkmated and that all campaign promises are duly fulfilled within our stipulated tenure. There will be a safe intra governmental and political atmosphere to govern our people in Anambra State”.

As a core democrat and an advocate of good governance, Dr. Godwin Maduka’s achievements over the years in his hometown Umuchukwu in particular and Anambra State in general is a clear yardstick that if given the opportunity to govern Anambra State, he will stop at nothing to make sure that all the tenets of democracy and good governance are upheld for the good of Ndi Anambra State.
