OUR SACRIFICES AND COMMITMENTS MAKES IT EVIDENT THAT WE WOULD GET THERE, DR. GODWIN MADUKA PENS DOWN DEMOCRACY MESSAGE TO NIGERIANS.

Rather than dwell on our many shortcomings, we should celebrate and acknowledge the sacrifices made by our founding fathers in ensuring the protection of our freedom. Our nation is blessed with so much, even when expectation of the common man often gets disappointed. Our God given potentials that defines us as Nigerians is never in doubt. However, celebrating ‘June 12’ would be incomplete without mentioning the the Ajali born lecturer of the University of Nigeria Nsuka, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu. He was the Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC) that conducted the June 12, 1993 election.

In his word, “With so many achievements recorded as a nation, I join Nigerians all over the world in celebrating our 61st Independence. Rather than dwell on our many shortcomings, we should acknowledge and celebrate our founding fathers who paid the ultimate price for us to celebrate 21 years of uninterrupted democracy today. There is no honor that’s too much for their bravery and sacrifice made for the democracy we have today”.

“Justice, fairness and equity are no doubt veritable ingredients of democracy. Challenges we face and those we’ve conquered no doubt has made us stronger and better united as a people. Even as we have more to do in growing/practicing true democracy, this hasn’t in any way diminished our commitment and sacrifice and hope for a greater country. Our sacrifices and commitments make it evident that we would get there”.

With emphasis on the definition of Democracy as “Government of the people, for the people and by the people”, Okosisi Orumba admonished the Youths to channel their interests to politics and governance. Stating that, it is the only way they can participate and take change of their future.

He urged all to pray for our leaders, keep fate and remain steadfast as we continue to wage a united battle against corruption, corona virus (COVID-19) and other challenges we face today. Irrespective of our socio-political or religious differences, let’s continue to move forward with courage, in unity, sincerity of purpose and optimism as we perfect Democracy in Nigeria.

May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
