Residents of Durumi Extension popularly known as Government Land, Gonin Gora, in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State have lamented the terrible state of the community road.
Some of the residents who spoke with SaharaReporters on the condition of anonymity alleged that while the road in the community has become a death trap, the Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led state government has neglected them because the community is predominantly occupied by Christians.
They also said that they gathered from some unverified sources that the governor neglected them on the allegation that they did not vote for him during the last elections.
According to them, despite the fact that the road is also important to people from other parts of Nigeria as the popular Kaduna-Abuja Expressway passed through the community, the state government has rather concentrated its developmental strides in the areas predominantly occupied by Muslims in the towns and cities around them.
SaharaReporters learnt that Kaduna has been divided in a way that Muslims live in particular parts while Christians live in particular parts.
“A lot of developmental strides going on in Kaduna State are concentrated in the areas occupied by Muslims. The major problem in the areas mainly occupied by Christians is that the road here is not motorable at all. It is so bad that it is hard for anybody to ply it. For instance, it rained so heavily that everywhere became virtually inaccessible,” a resident said.
Also speaking, another resident said, “We heard that the governor said that people in this area didn’t vote for him and this area has been neglected over time.
“Meanwhile, it is a community where the popular Kaduna-Abuja Expressway passes through. It is not a hidden place; rather, it is a place to be reckoned with in Kaduna.”
As a result of the deplorable state of the road, residents said that accidents occurred on it from time to time.
“On Saturday, I witnessed a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger involved in an accident on the road,” another resident said.
Calling on the state government for intervention, another resident said, “We are begging the government to look into it and intervene because it is a place where a lot of people are living. The road is not too long. The government can easily fix it if they want to because it is not up to the work they have done in the areas that Muslims are living.
“We are really appealing to the state government to come to our aide here.”
