Chen Gang, former vice mayor of Beijing and senior official of China Association for Science and Technology, was on Friday sentenced 15 years behind bars for taking bribes worth 129 million yuan (20 million U.S. dollars).

According to the Supreme Court’s official WeChat news, on the morning of February 5th, the Nanjing Intermediate People’s Court of Jiangsu Province publicly sentenced Chen Gang, a former member of the party group, secretary of the Secretariat, and member of the Standing Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology, against the defendant.

The investigation found that from 2003 to 2018, the defendant Chen Gang took advantage of his position as director of the Beijing Municipal Planning Commission, deputy mayor of the Beijing Municipal People’s Government, and member of the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China to loot.

The Secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology, the Standing Committee, etc., facilitated the formation of powers and status for relevant companies to provide assistance in matters such as changes in the nature of construction projects, adjustments to planning indicators, and project approval and acceptance. The illegal receipt of property from others is converted into a total of RMB 128,877,328 million.

The Nanjing Intermediate People’s Court held that the actions of the defendant Chen Gang constituted the crime of accepting bribes.

In view of the fact that Chen Gang surrendered to the case-handling agency when he had not yet been investigated, talked or interrogated, and truthfully confessed his crimes, which constituted surrender; after he came back to the case, he provided clues to the investigation of other major cases, which was verified to be true and made other major contributions to the country and society. Performance; pleaded guilty and repented, actively returned the stolen goods, all the money and stolen goods received from bribes have been recovered, there are statutory and discretionary lighter or mitigated punishment circumstances, and the punishment can be reduced according to law.

The court then made the above judgment.
