Gas explosion rocks Iju Ishaga Lagos community

Several persons were injured after a gas explosion occurred at Cele Bus stop, Iju Ishaga area of Lagos on Thursday.

Cars, shops and houses near the scene of the explosion were also razed.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the explosion was caused by a truck conveying petrol.

A nearby mini-market was also razed by the inferno and electric cables in the area destroyed.

“On arrival at the scene, it was observed that there was a gas explosion at the aforementioned address,” LAASEMA said.

“Further investigation revealed that an unknown truck conveying gasoline had a lone accident and exploded.

“The impact of the explosion led to fire at adjoining buildings and several vehicles were burnt.

“Several persons were injured and have been taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Ibrahim Farinloye, the acting coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, said the gasoline-laden tanker was trying to enter a gas plant at Iju and exploded before entering.

“One of the gas tankers wanted to enter into Manna Gas Refiling Plant and before it could get access inside, it exploded and affected the second gas tanker and other domestic gas cylinders in the gas plant also exploded.

“The explosion affected 18 buildings housing 35 shops; no residential building was affected.

“People sustained minor burns. 15 people were admitted at Iju Waterworks Clinic, two referred to General Hospital, three on critical observation, and 10 are being treated presently,” Mr Farinloye said.

The inferno is being tackled by the combined efforts of the LASEMA Response Team led by the director of operations, LRU Fire, LASG Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force and NSCDC.

30 persons were injured in the explosion caused by 30 ton LPG Tanker conveying gas.

Giving update on the incident, Femi Oke-Osayintolu, the Director-General of LASEMA said “It was confirmed that a 30 ton LPG Tanker being operated by Mana Gas Ltd was involved in an explosion which destroyed several vehicles, X and Y Event Center and a Plank Market in the above mentioned axis.

The discharging valve of the tanker, which was compromised, led to leakage and ignited fire.

“The responders discovered that a compromised seal device by the truck driver had led to gradual leakages which then ignited when the tyres burst,” he said.

The fire, which spread to adjoining buildings, affected 23 buildings and 35 shops, destroying property worth millions of naira.

Nosa Okunbor, the spokesperson of the agency, also said the fire was totally extinguished around 6:27 p.m.

The inferno has been put out completely around 6pm on Thursday.

The total number of casualties are 30 consisting of 20 Adult Male and 10 adult Female.

Combined responders were the Agency’s Tiger squad, LRU Paramedics, LRU Fire team, LASG Fire Service, NEMA, NPF, NSCDC and Red Cross
