THE Police have confirmed four dead in Kano gas explosion that rocked Kano state on Tuesday morning.

An explosion rocked a storey building opposite Winners Kid Academy on Aba Road, Sabon Gari area of Kano State. It destroyed a residential building and affected part of the school. Several people suffered horrific injuries during the incident.

The explosion occurred around 9:30 am with many schoolchildren affected. Visuals of the incident showed several injured schoolchildren crying for help. Some parents were seen rushing to the scene to rescue their children.

“Where are my children?” one parent shouted.

While some injured schoolchildren have been rescued, others were stranded at the scene before the arrival of emergency responders.

The National Emergency Management Agency and Fire service operatives were on the ground trying to rescue victims of the explosion. Also, the army, police, and NSCDC had surrounded the place.

ANOTHER BUILDING not SCHOOL

The explosion did not occur in a school or beneath it as widely reported, this has also been clarified by the Kano State Government.

The state Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, said the incident happened at an animal feed store opposite the school along Aba Road, Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government.

He said while the cause of the explosion and the damage had yet to be officially ascertained, an investigation has since commenced to determine the cause, impact and measures to be taken.

Garba called on the people in the state, particularly those living in the area where the incident occurred, to remain calm while the government in collaboration with relevant agencies are working on the matter.

The commissioner assured residents that government would keep the public abreast of any development.

It wasn’t a bomb blast. It’s a gas cylinder explosion. The seller’s shop is on the ground floor of the building where the school is located. So, when the cylinder exploded, it brought down the building and the pupils got injured. There wasn’t a bomb blast.

GAS not BOMB

Also clarifying, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Sama’ila Dikko, said its gas and not a bomb explosion.

He made the clarification during his visitation to the scene of the incident.

Dikko, who spoke in Hausa, also confirmed that four persons were dead.

The CP said that rescue workers were working to remove people trapped at the building where the explosion occurred.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were seen packing what is suspected to be shattered body parts of the suspected suicide bomber.

A welder in front of Winners Schools, Kano, which is adjacent the scene, is reported to be among the casualties.
