Govt. Clears Illegal Structures On Lagos Island, Warns ‘Omo Onile’

The Lagos State Government has commenced another round of clean up exercise at Lagos Island.

The exercise targets vehicles parked indiscriminately on the roads, illegal structures, makeshift shops erected on walkways, road medians and drainage alignments.

Govt. Clears Illegal Structures On Lagos Island, Warns ‘Omo Onile’

Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business Districts, Olugbenga Oyerinde said the government was committed to full restoration of the beauty and master plan of the districts.

He condemned the flagrant disrespect to traffic, environmental and urban planning laws by roadside sellers, mechanics, commercial motorcyclists and bus drivers who pick and drop passengers at unauthorized places.

“We are working with relevant agencies of government and trade unions especially NURTW and leadership of market associations to check these illegalities,” Oyerinde said.

The official lambasted street urchins and miscreants popularly known as “omo onile” for allocating parking spaces to motorists.

He warned them to desist, adding that no amount of resistance would make the government to rescind its resolve to clean up the state.

“We will continue to impound vehicles in unauthorized places and commercial motorcyclists on unauthorized roads. The removal of shop extensions built on walkways and drainages as directed by the Governor is in progress.”

Oyerinde disclosed that vehicles and motorcycles impounded during the exercise will be arraigned at the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court.
