The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife, PhD, has celebrated Nigerian women, urging them to be resilient in the face of challenges. She noted that hard work, diligence and prayers are key to success.

Ekwunife said this in a statement on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, in commemoration of the International Women’s Day celebration.

The Federal Lawmaker urged Nigerian women not to be demoralised by the outcome of the recent constitutional amendment process by the National Assembly, where most gender related bills could not scale through the both chambers of the Assembly.

“It is unfortunate that we could not succeed in establishing a more gender friendly nation through the recent constitutional amendment process, however, I urge our women not be demoralised by the outcome as we will not relent in ensuring that gender-inclusiveness is reflected in our laws”, Ekwunife said.

The Senator stated that the mindset that women should sit back and serve as mere home managers is no longer feasible in the modern age, particularly now that our nation is in need of resourceful leadership which women can offer. “This is an era to encourage women to be ‘working housewives’ in order to financially support their families and equally contribute greatly to the society”.

Speaking on this year’s theme, which is, gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow, the federal lawmaker stated that women must take their destinies in their own hands by supporting each other and competing for opportunities.

“Nothing good comes easy. Women must realise that men are not going to hand them positions of leadership on a silver platter. They must show interest and be ready to compete. Experience has taught me that women who wish to succeed in life must put in a great deal of effort to pull through”, the Lawmaker said.

The Chairman Senate committee on Science, Technology and Innovation urged government at all levels to promote policies that will encourage more women to be part of government. “Active involvement of women in all sectors of the nation’s economy will be beneficial to our society as women possess natural managerial abilities”, She remarked.

Senator Uche Ekwunife celebrated the women of Anambra State and Nigeria for their efforts in building homes, societies and nations. She urged them to use the resourceful abilities which nature has endowed them with to contribute meaningfully to the development of the society.
