Jigawa Civil servants decry hike in transport fares, call for working days reduction

Jigawa State civil servants have urged the state governor, Malam Umar Namadi, to consider the reduction of the working days due to the high cost of transport fares.

Checks revealed that all filling stations in the state are selling the product at the cost of N620 per litter following the subsidy removal of the petrol.

A cross-section of the civil servants who spoke to DAILY POST at the state secretariat, said the trend has exposed them to difficulties.

Malam Musa, a civil servant said due to the subsidy removal he has no other option than to park his motorcycle and take commercial motorcycle or trek.

“Before the subsidy removal, I used my motorcycle, even after when the fuel is being sold at N520 but now I can’t afford it, therefore I had to trek to my working place.”

Ibrahim, a staff in one of the state’s ministries, said most of the civil servants have parked all their cars and are now following commercial vehicles to Dutse, their places of work.

“Even some of the senior civil servants who have never followed the commercial vehicle in their lives are now following commercial vehicles due to the hike in price of petrol because they can not afford it.

“I don’t think after buying my foodstuffs this month I will have remaining money for my transportation.

“The government should look at the suffering of its citizens and consider alternatives to end or minimize their hardships.”

They, however, urged the government to reduce the working days and increase wages to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

The National Executive Council (NEC) has on Thursday agreed on palliative measures for Nigerians.
