Jodie Turner-Smith targeted by thieves in Cannes

Jodie Turner-Smith was left distressed after being targeted by thieves who stole tens of thousands of pounds worth of jewellery from her hotel room in Cannes while she was working at the film festival.

The 34-year-old British star – who is married to Dawson’s Creek star, Joshua Jackson – revealed she has given evidence to police in the French city as authorities try to track down the criminals.

Jodie – who was at the iconic Cannes Film Festival to promote her new film, After Yang – also had a priceless family heirloom stolen in the raid as her mother’s wedding ring was taken in the theft.

Reports have suggested thieves targeted the actress after she wore gold and diamond jewellery from the Gucci High Jewellery line to her premiere on Thursday night.

While the jewels were returned to Gucci after she wore them on the red carpet, it is suggested the criminals wrongly targeted her thinking the items would still be in her hotel room.

Variety reported the incident on Sunday and revealed the thieves broke in to Jodie’s hotel room – which she was sharing with the baby one-year-old daughter she shares with Joshua – at the Marriott to the Majestic hotel.

The film trade magazine stated the incident took place on Friday and reported: “robbers broke into her room and stole jewels worth several tens of thousands of euros. One of the items was effectively priceless: her mother’s wedding ring.”

The report said Jodie and her baby daughter were immediately moved to a new hotel and were: “given a large security detail, which has been accompanying her everywhere.”

Jodie herself commented on the drama on Sunday.

Taking to Twitter, the actress wrote: “didn’t think i would be spending 2.5 hours in the police station on my final day in cannes, but here we are…”

She added an emoji with a distressed face to her update – and drew sympathy and support from fans.

Local news outlet Nice-Matin reported on the crime, and stated: “there was no forced entry of the hotel room’s door, which is opened using a key card, and an investigation is underway.”

Criminals have been known to target celebrities at high profile events in the past.

Back in 2013, $1 million (£720,000) of Chopard jewellery was stolen from the Novotel hotel in Cannes while the festival was in full swing.

While back in 2016 at Paris Fashion Week in the French capital, reality star Kim Kardashian was held at gunpoint in a horrifying hotel robbery in which thieves made off with $10 million (£7.2 million) worth of jewellery.
