On the heels of the landslide erosion that has sunk numerous houses that once stood on Obeleagu Street of Inland Town, Onitsha, the Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation led by Hon. Chineme Oguegbe, the DG of Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation, visited the victims of this latest ecological disaster which had since displaced not less than 5,000 residents of the area.

The leader of the delegation from the humanitarian foundation stated during the press briefing yesterday at the Obeleagu erosion site of Inland Town, Onitsha that the foundation was poised to come to the aid of the victims of the erosion, as the hardship which the erosion disaster threw them into needed to be given serious attention. While the erosion might have been caused due to a deficit of proper drainage channels in the area, local lore holds that the erosion might be an act of nature caused by some supernatural, superstitious force(s).

Touched by the sufferings, hardship, poverty and destitution which prevailed upon the residents of the area, the Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation was moved to provide some ‘palliatives’ and relief materials to the victims of the flood/erosion disaster.

Hon. Chineme Oguegbe stated succinctly that Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation will also provide any form of necessary support or assistance that the displaced victims would need in the course of time.

He called on the state government to expidite action in the process of reclaiming the land through expedient, direct labour working relations so as to bring succour to the victims of the area, especially the landlords whose houses were washed down by the landslide. Similarly, he called on well-meaning Anambrarians, good-spirited individuals and humanitarians to emulate the good example of Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo and come to the rescue of the impoverished and displaced victims.

From the site of the erosion, the delegation proceeded to St. Mary’s Catholic Church to interface with the victims of the erosion disaster. The foundation encouraged them to keep hope alive, work hard and trust God for better days ahead. About 200 displaced victims of the landslide erosion benefitted from the Foundation’s donation of palliative/relief fund.

The beneficiaries of this humanitarian gesture sincerely thanked the founder of Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation, Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo, and prayed God to replenish him profoundly even as they appreciated the good man for remembering them in their time of difficulty and misfortune. They asked God to bless him and bless his vision for Anambra State and cried unto God to give Anambra State a leader like Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo.
