Jude Osei, a young Ghanaian inventor who captured the attention of President Akufo-Addo with his solar-powered hand-washing machine has earned the recognition of the United Nations (UN).
Jude Osei, a native of Kumasi, converted a metallic drum that was simply fitted with a sink, sensors and cables that connect to the solar panel on top into a hand-washing machine.
Once a user places their hand under the tap, the sensor sends a signal and soap is released on the person’s hand.
The system is programmed to allow 25 seconds for the person to wash the hands well before rinsing begins — a standard way for hand washing.
Jude Osei disclosed in a clip that the amazing invention allows water to flow automatically for washing hands in an effort to help curb the spread of the pandemic coronavirus in the country.
According to Osei, the solar-powered hand-washing machine can wash the hands of 150 people before refill.
On Sunday, April 5, 2020, the President of Ghana, Akufo-Addo said that he was ”impressed with the invention of a solar-powered hand-washing sink by Jude Osei” during a televised address to the nation.
Just recently, Jude Osei said he had been contacted by a representative of the UN as well as some international press.
Ghana currently have 452 cases of COVID-19.
Moreso, the Former Nigeria Minister of Finance and celebrated Economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iwealaa also posted Jude on her Twitter.
Her Tweet came with a video of Jude demonstrating how his solar-powered handwashing sink works.
Ngozi said, “Solutions to #COVID19: Our young people are ingenious. Take a look at this attractive hand washing machine invention by a young Ghanaian!”
