Kwara Hijab Crisis: Bishop Oyedepo weigh’s in

By God’s design, Oyedepo is Daddy to Obi and mockers may pay dearly

Founder of Living Faith Church also known as Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo has weighed in on the crisis over the wearing of Hijab (Islamic headscarf) by Muslim female students in Government contributing Missionary Schools in Kwara State.

Recall violence erupted at the Baptist Secondary School, Surulere, Ilorin, over the refusal of the school authorities to allow female students to use hijab. Parents of the students engaged the school authorities in a hot argument which resulted in a stone-throwing contest between Christians and Muslims.

Reacting, Oyedepo described the incident as a “nasty development” and also asked those behind the decision to leave the schools for their Christian owners and go to Muslim schools.

He warned them against putting their fingers in the eyes of others when they are not blind.

“I have never seen a place in my life where a tenant will be decreeing for the landlord…you know the reason why? We have never shown the world the other side of God.

“God is not a toy. Our God is a consuming fire, let us show them the consuming fire of God, they need to know.

“Leave the schools for the owners, go to your schools, is there any fight? Stop putting fingers in the eyes of others.

“The church is a time-bomb when God turns his back on anybody or any system, that system is grounded.

“My advice is, leave the schools for the owners, find your schools…men and women can wear hijab there.. Stop putting your fingers in the eyes of others when they are not blind.”

Meanwhile the 10 schools shut down by the Kwara State Government in February over the hijab crisis resumed academic activities on Monday.

Both students and teachers entered the school with little resistance especially at Baptist Secondary School, Surulere and Cherubim, and Seraphim College, Sabo-Oke in Ilorin where Christians and Muslims clashed last week.

Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, said normalcy had since been returned to schools and business community in the metropolis.

Earlier, founders of the grant-aided schools in Kwara State vowed they won’t accept wearing of hijab by female students. They urged the State Government to return to negotiating table with them.

Chairman District Church Councils (DCCs) Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) Rev (Dr) Vincent Akintunde refuted rumour it has conceded to the directive of state government to allow the hijab in ECWA Schools, Oja-Iya, Ilorin.

Akintunde said: “We consider the action of the state government on this matter an injustice and we would use every legitimate means to fight for our God-given property and heritage in the state.

“We want to use the opportunity of this platform to say to the state government that ECWA will not accept the use of hijab in her schools under any circumstances and our schools should be given back to us.”

Archbishop of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Kwara state, the Most Reverend Israel Amoo, advised the state government to return to the negotiating table with all stakeholders in the hijab controversy.
