Lawyer detained in Igando Police Station over Tenancy Matter

A Lagos based lawyer, Abdulkareem Abdulsalam Esq, have been detained at the Igando Police Station while on a tenancy matter.

 

According to a statement by Ayo Ademiluyi Esq, the lawyer was detained after he explained to the police men that “tenancy matter is a civil matter” – he was representing a client who is also in the police cell.

The statement reads;

“WE DEMAND IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF ABDULKAREEM ABDULSALAM ESQ. FROM UNLAWFUL DETENTION AT IGANDO POLICE STATION

 

We act as Solicitors to ABDULKAREEM ABDULSALAM ESQ., a legal practitioner (“our client).

 

We have it on firm instructions of our client’s cousin , Abdulkazeem Abdulsalam that our client went in respect of a tenancy matter reported to a IGANDO POLICE STATION. That our client correctly clarified to the Police officers at IGANDO POLICE STATION that tenancy matter is a civil matter and can only be determined by a Court of law not a Police Station. That our client was clamped into unlawful detention for asserting this correct position of law.


We hereby demand that the COMMISSIONER OF POLICE OF LAGOS STATE to call the DIVISIONAL POLICE OFFICER, IGANDO POLICE STATION to order and release our client within 24 HOURS, failing which we will be left with no choice than to proceed within the armbit of the law to enforce the fundamental rights of our client.

 

We also call again on the PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION , THE CHAIRMAN OF NBA LAGOS BRANCH, which he belongs to and ALL MEMBERS OF THE BAR to wade into this matter.
