The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife, PhD, has assured that Nigeria would stand in solidarity with the rest of the globe in cutting down on carbon emission, reduce climate change and stave off the potential devastating effects.
The federal lawmaker noted that efficient use of energy and embracing clean energy sources are essential in limiting global warming.
Delivering a goodwill message at the opening ceremony of 2022 National Energy Summit held at Fraser Suites Hotel, Abuja, Ekwunife expressed that the federal government is committed to achieving the vision of International Energy Charter (IEC) through energy and climate-friendly change policies. The senator emphasized that as a member state of IEC that the federal lawmaker would continue to support the energy charter treaty, adding that renewable energy Infrastructure is essential in the 21th century.
While assuring that the National Assembly will provide the legislative backing to enhance the working of the IEC agreement, the A-grade lawmaker reiterated that domestication of any energy related multilateral agreements aimed to attract investors to the country remains a priority.
“As a testimony to our commitment to the realization of the theme of this summit, the Senate Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation has concluded necessary legislative actions on “National Energy Sustainable Development Bill 2021” which provides for legal, fiscal and regulatory framework for the sustainable energy development with the overall objective of providing clean, affordable, adequate and reliable energy in Nigeria. The report will be considered at the plenary any time soon for passage to law”, she noted.
Earlier, the Chairman Senate Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation commended the ingenuity and foresights of the Energy Commission of Nigeria and charged the agency of continued research and framework for cross-border cooperation in the field of energy development.
