National Sports Festival: Edo govt directs teachers, pupils to return to class

Following the postponement of the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival, earlier scheduled to hold in Edo State from March 22 to April 1, 2020, the Edo State Government has directed schools across the state to disregard the initial announcement of an amendment of schools’ calendar in the state.

In a statement, Commissioner for Education, Hon. Jimoh ljegbai, urged schools in the state to maintain the original school calendar to the effect that 2nd term vacation commences on the 3rd of April, 2020.

According to ljegbai, “It is hereby announced for the benefit of the general public, particularly Public and Private Primary and Post Primary Schools that the National Sports Festival has been postponed.

“The public is hereby notified that the earlier announcement regarding the amendment of the school calendar is hereby cancelled.”

The commissioner added, “Consequently, Public and Private Schools are to follow the original school calendar to the effect that 2nd term vacation commences on the 3rd of April, 2020 as originally scheduled, while the 3rd term resumption date remains 27th April 2020”

Recall that the government had earlier directed all public and private schools in Edo State to proceed on break from Monday, 23th March, 2020 and resume 2nd April, 2020 due to the sports fiesta.

Meanwhile, Human rights activist and former senator in the 8th National Assembly, Shehu Sani has praised the Federal Government of Nigeria over the cancellation of the 2020 National Sports Festival.

Reacting to the cancellation of the sports activity, Shehu Sani took to his verified Twitter page to applaud the government, noting that Coronavirus is not a thing to joke with.

He said: “The Cancellation of the 2020 National Sports Festival by the Federal Government is commendable. That Convid with No 19 jersey no be joke.”
