Brazilian football superstar Neymar was forced onto the back foot Friday after fierce criticism over his public endorsement of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro just days before a deeply-polarized election.
On Thursday, the 30-year-old publicly stated his support for President Jair Bolsonaro as Brazil is having its elections on Sunday. Neymar appeared on a TikTok video singing Bolsonaro’s campaign song, lip-synching, “Vote, vote, and press ‘confirm’ for 22, that’s Bolsonaro.”
Nonetheless, Neymar’s appearance generated much controversy in Brazil, which is why the PSG star would have followed up his appearance on the video with a tweet calling out those who disagree with his political views on the upcoming election.
“They talk about democracy and a lot of things, but when someone has a different opinion they are attacked by the very people who talk about democracy,” Neymar tweeted on Friday. “Go figure.”
During Bolsonaro’s presidency, there was plenty of criticism for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has killed more than 650,000 Brazilians. As a result, this is one of the reasons why Neymar received some pushback for his stance on supporting the current president.
On Sunday, Bolsonaro’s primary opponent at the polls will be former Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva. Whichever candidate gets 50 percent plus one vote would win the election outright without needing a second-round runoff.
On Thursday, the 30-year-old footballer posted a video on TikTok — where he has over eight million followers — of himself bopping to a pro-Bolsonaro campaign song, a big grin on his face.
He used his fingers to flash the number 22 — the candidate number of Bolsonaro in his election showdown against leftist ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is leading in the polls.
“Vote, vote, and press ‘confirm’ for 22, that’s Bolsonaro,” goes the song, a reference to Brazil’s electronic voting machines — which the president alleges, without evidence, are plagued by fraud.
Bolsonaro wasted no time retweeting the Neymar seal of approval.
But many other social media users expressed outrage at Neymar using his star power in this way.
He has nearly 180 million followers on Instagram and 58 million on Twitter.
Among his critics was former Brazilian striker Walter Casagrande, who wrote in a column for UOL Esporte that Neymar had “revealed all his incoherence… and his lack of social awareness.”
He criticized Neymar, who had previously came out in support of the anti-racist cause, for giving his backing to “the most prejudiced candidate in Brazilian political history, who has made homophobic, sexist and notoriously racist statements.”
Neymar fired back on Twitter Friday that: “They talk about democracy and a lot of things, but when someone has a different opinion they are attacked by the very people who talk about democracy.”
His tweet ended with laughing and shrugging emojis.
Bolsonaro backers have adopted the yellow-and-green jersey of Brazil’s national team as a symbol of support for the president, along with the Brazilian flag.
Neymar and Bolsonaro are both vocals about their Christianity.
