The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has faulted the Nigerian Army for claiming to have arrested a deputy commander of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

 

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, had on May 12, 2021, announced that the force arrested one Awurum Eze, a native of Umoneke Nta, Isiala-Mbano LGA, Imo State.

 

Yerima described the 48-year-old suspect as the second in command to ESN leader, Ikonso, who was recently neutralised by the army.

In a statement, he said Eze “had on the 4th of May 2021 escaped when operatives of Intelligence Response Team (IRT) stormed his village house in Isiala Mbano where he was hiding.

 

“The second in command to the neutralised IPOB/ESN terrorist leader Ikonso, Awurum Eze, has been nabbed.

 

“The 48 years old Awurum Eze, a native of Umoneke Nta, Isiala-Mbano LGA, Imo State, had on May 4, 2021 escaped when operatives of Intelligence Response Team stormed his village house in Isiala Mbano where he was hiding.

 

 

“Intensive manhunt was thereafter launched towards tracing and arresting him. He was eventually apprehended on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, in Aba after weeks of unrelenting follow-ups by operatives.

 

“Awurum Eze is one of the main sponsors of the numerous killings in Imo State and has been on the wanted list of security agents for more than three months. Many of the arrested IPOB /ESN terrorists had earlier mentioned him as their key sponsor, mastermind and second in command to the late Ikonso.

 

“According to them, among all their leaders in Imo State, only Ikonso and Awurum have direct communication link with Nnamdi Kanu. He can be seen in several photographs posing with the fugitive terrorist leader, Nnamdi Kanu.”

 

He also shared photos showing Eze standing beside Kanu and other persons.

Reacting, Kanu shared photos showing him with prominent South-East leaders and wondered if they could also be labelled ESN deputy commanders just because of the photo they took with him.

 

He tweeted, “Since standing beside or taking a photo with me makes you an #ESN “deputy commander”, perhaps the very preeminent & foremost constitutional lawyer, Prof. Nwabueze, @DaveUmahi, & Gov. Ugwuanyi are all #ESN deputy commanders. @HQNigerianArmy exhibiting their usual idiocy. #ZOO.”

Yoruba Group Reacts

In a statement by Comrade Raphael Adewale on Wednesday, 21th May, on behalf of the Oduduwa Liberation Christian Congress (OLCC), the Nigerian Army only arrested a Jewish Rabbi and not Ikonso’s deputy and said.

 

 

The statement reads,

 

The FULANI-controlled NIGERIAN army have arrested the Jewish Rabbi who stood as surety for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu when he was granted bail in 2017.

 

They have accused him of being the second in command to Ikonso the late ESN commander that was murdered by the FULANI-controlled NIGERIAN army.

 

We want to use this medium to inform the general public that we the Agitators of Yoruba Nation Republic, under the umbrella of Oduduwa Liberation Christian Congress is standing in solidarity with our Igbo friends and neighbours.

We also use this opportunity to state categorically clear that a harm on the Igbo nation is a harm on the entire Yoruba Nation.

 

Therefore, should the ethnic crisis lingering between the FULANI and the Igbo eventually breaks into a full scale war, we Yoruba sons and daughters will without any hesitation throw our support on our Igbo friends.

We advise both parties to trade with caution and consider any other possible ways to resolve their differences, so as to avoid the avoidable calamity that would befall on us all should another civil war begin.

 

About ESN’S Late Commander – IKONSO

Ikonso, whose real name was Nwaokike Kayinayo is a late IPOB cum ESN commander killed by the joint task force of Nigeria Police Force, their counterparts from the Nigerian Army and DSS in a joint operation, in the early hours 24th April, 2021 after they stormed the operational headquarters of IPOB in Awomama Village Oru East LGA of Imo State.

 

 

According to their after statement, “The Insurgents are responsible for the attack on the Imo State Police Headquarters and the headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service on 5th April, 2021. They have also carried out series of calculated, violent attacks on security personnel and formations in the south east and south south of the country.

 

“As the security forces approached the base of the insurgents, they came under rapid fire from the group. In a bold and clinical response, the joint security forces fought back gallantly. The Forces eventually neutralized the overall commander of the insurgents in the Southeast popularly known as Ikonso Commander and six (6) other armed fighters of the insurgent group. Commander Ikonso is known as the Vice President designate as well as the coordinator of all the militia operations of the group. He was the mastermind and coordinator of the attack on the Imo Police Headquarters and several other attacks on security and military personnel and facilities.

 

“The operation is part of deliberate effort by the Police and other security forces to quel the activities of insurgents in Imo State and other States of the South East and South South region of the country.

 

“After the fierce gun battle, the security team recovered the remains of Ikonso Commander and the six (6) of his fighters. Several sophisticated weapons including six(6) AK47 rifles, hundreds of ammunition of different caliber and lots of charms including bullet Proof charms were recovered from the insurgents.

 

“At the time of filing this report, three policemen and one army officer are receiving treatment having sustained serious bullet injuries during exchange of gunfire with the insurgents.”

 

THE CHEAT?

Yes. The Nigerian Army may have claimed to kill Ikonso but many believe its to easy to be true. Many believe irrespective of the ‘Joint’ effort, it was definitely a cheap. But the question is, how?

 

Theory 1: Murdered while Sleeping

The Indigenous People of Biafra says Nigeria’s security operatives murdered the Eastern Security Network’s commander, Ikonso in his sleep in his father’s compound in Imo State on Saturday.

 

 

The group refuted the claims by the Nigerian Army, the police and the State Security Service that Ikonso was killed during a gun battle.

 

It also disclosed that some killer herdsmen that the security agencies could not confront were driven out of the state solely by the late Ikonso, saying it was the reason why they connived with the Nigerian government to kill him. The pro-Biafra group disclosed this in a statement by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful.

 

It made this disclosure while condemning the suspension and fining of Channels Television by the National Broadcasting Commission for granting an interview to the IPOB spokesman on Sunday night.

 

It described the suspension of the station as an attempt by the Nigerian government to muzzle the media for disseminating the truth to Nigerians and the international community.

 

“That Aso Rock viciously and wickedly turned against their long term buddy, Channels Television, tells you all you need to know about Fulani Janjaweedism. It confirms that you can’t be friends with this bunch of hardened terrorists in power in Nigeria.

 

“Nigerian media initially failed to investigate and report the accurate information about the death of Commander Ikonso and those with him. Sections of the media only peddled lies and fake news dished out by the same security agencies that murdered Ikonso in his sleep.

 

“The bitter truth the Nigerian Government didn’t want people to hear, which IPOB disclosed at the said interview, was that Ikonso was murdered in his father’s house, not in any imaginary ESN camp or battlefield as the liars would hope to have us believe.

 

“The same Army, Police and DSS in Imo State that never for one day arrested or prosecuted any Fulani terror herdsman ravaging Imo State before the coming of Ikonso; the same Nigerian security agents that have always provided cover for terrorists and bandits, had the guts to ambush and kill the only man that drove Fulani terrorist herdsmen out of Imo State. Something Hope Uzodinma, Ohaneze Ndigbo and those Efulefus that conspired to kill him was not able to do.

 

“Commander Ikonso and the men with him in his father’s house were murdered by the Nigerian state with the help of APC (All Progressives Congress) politicians and Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership in Imo State. The worst part is that they lied about it,” a part of the statement read.

 

The Nnamdi Kanu-led group, however, reinstated that it was not formed to attack innocent lives but to go after terrorists disguising as Fulani herdsmen in the South-East region, insisting that Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, Ohanaeze Ndigbo President, Prof George Ndigbo and other chieftains of the APC in the state conspired to kill Ikonso for waging war against Fulani terrorists.

 

“The Federal Government of Nigeria knows they cannot suppress the truth as far as IPOB is concerned. We will always put the records straight because the facts will always speak for itself.

 

 

“We are not Miyetti Allah, and we don’t kill or attack innocent individuals but Fulani terrorist herdsmen masquerading as cattle herders in our bushes and forests. This was the mandate of ESN and the cause for which Ikonso, a hero and gallant, patriotic Biafran and his men were murdered in cold blood.

 

“Commander Ikonso was only defending the land of his ancestors. He was murdered with the active connivance of Hope Uzodinma, George Obiozor and APC politicians in Imo State. They wanted to cover this atrocity but when Channels Television gave us the opportunity to tell the truth, the murderers in uniform and their masters in Aso Rock became offended.

 

“The action of NBC against Channels Television is only meant to gag and intimidate the press into total submission. It’s part of the calculated attempt towards suppressing the press and blocking the outside world access to atrocities being perpetrated against indigenous peoples in Nigeria.

 

“This is how they hurriedly and unjustifiably proscribed IPOB and tagged its innocent members terrorists without according the movement the right of defence in a law court. Nigeria is a country where injustice, hypocrisy and falsehood hold sway,” the statement concluded.

People who engaged security agents with chain bullets without GPMG is another fake setup.

 

–  They displayed 3 ak47 with only one magazine and no bullets. People who they claimed engaged the security agents on heavy gun battle with only one magazine can only happen in a ferry tale. They lied!

 

–  They displayed pistols without bullets. What are they using to shoot the pistols? The criminal and terrorist security agents arranged all these weapons for show.

 

–  They displayed cutlass without stain of blood and they said the men engaged them in a heavy gun battle.

The question every human being must ask now is, with which weapon did Ikonso engaged the security with?

The Nigeria security agents must answer to this question, this is a murder case and all those involved in this murder will pay dearly.

Theory 2: Help from Infidels – How Informants Helped Security Operatives To Kill IPOB/ESN Commander – Ikonso

The Nigerian Army ‘s operation against the Eastern Security Network and Indigenous People of Biafra in Awomama Village, Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State was aided by local informants which led to the killing of top commander, Ikonso Don, and others, SaharaReporters learned.

 

 

Sources told SaharaReporters that Ikonso was also given away by some of his photographs shared on social media as well as by one of his friends, who had been in touch with security agencies for weeks, if not months.

“Ikonso Don was a well-known hardcore IPOB member. When the ESN was launched, he joined and participated in several operations, rising to later become a commander. He was going to his village in Umuoma alongside other ESN members when they were ambushed.

 

“He was targeted and killed after some of the Igbo he was fighting for gave out his details to the security forces,” a source explained.

 

“His photographs were also shared on social media by a friend and he was given away as the ESN commander. That was the same place his photograph with Nnamdi Kanu was obtained,” another source revealed.

 

IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, added that Ikonso was truly ambushed.

 

“Yesterday (Saturday), our commander went to his village. They ambushed him with some politicians. They ordered the military to kill him. In Imo State, they arrested more than 50 people. They have been going to people’s houses to arrest them; in Anambra, they arrested so many people; in Abia, they arrested so many people,” he stated.

 

Theory 3: The return of Abacha’s Apple

GOV. HOPE UZODINMA’s ROLE

Later on, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) confirmed the killing of Eastern Security Network (ESN), commander, Ikonso.

 

The report confirmation, however, came with a threat to Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma.

 

IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, in a statement, said the body led by Nnamdi Kanu, was angry about that Saturday’s “unprovoked attack”.

 

He said the ESN operatives were gunned down at Oguta junction at Mgbidi, along Owerri-Onitsha Expressway by a joint security force comprising the army, police and DSS operatives, with the support of Imo State Government.

 

Powerful noted that the killing of the “heroic innocent Biafrans protecting our communities and towns from Fulani terrorists herdsmen masquerading as cattle herders in cold blood is very painful”.

 

“The Supreme Court Administrator of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma and all those who have a hand in this wickedness will pay dearly. Hope Uzodinma and his cowardly Nigerian security agencies that cannot confront Fulani terrorists but only flex their muscles when they see Biafra agitators, for murdering Ikonso, the ESN unit COMMANDER in cold blood, Uzodima has stirred the hornet nest! He should get ready for a sting.

 

REASON HE WAS KILLED

“Uzodinma decided to kill Ikonso because he refused his offer to head Ebubeagu ghost security outfit formed by South East governors. Uzodinma has tried but without success to lure ESN operatives into Ebubeagu.

 

“He had made irresistible offers to them which were turned down, hence his resorting to elimination of these patriotic heroes who vowed never to betray Biafra.

 

“Hope Uzodinma sent a lot of emissaries to beg Ikonso and other ESN officers to join Ebubeagu security outfit. So, because of their refusal to betray Biafra agitation and our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the hopeless governor mobilized joint security forces to attack them today.

 

“Contrary to claims by the cowardly security forces who flee from terrorists but kill innocent citizens, they were not able to peneterate into the camp of Eastern Security Network ESN. They only ambushed Ikonso but we promise them hell for this cowardly act!

 

 

“Hope Uzodima has murdered sleep, so he should be ready to stay awake! FULANI terrorists pretending as cattle sellers in Enugu destroyed Police van and attacked Government officials on lawful duty with AK-47 but no Army, police or DSS attacked them till now.

A former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, challenged the Nigerian security agencies to eliminate the leader of Boko Haram terrorist sect, Abubakar Shekau, with the same force the security agencies used to crush a top member of the Indigenous People of Biafra, one Commander Ikonso.

 

Omokri challenged the security forces to take out the leaders of other criminal and terrorist elements in the country the same way Ikonso was ambushed.

 

He tweeted, “Can’t Nigeria’s Army also take out leaders of Boko Haram, bandits and killer herdsmen troubling Nigeria, the same way they took out alleged ESN leader, Ikonso? Or, are they (security agencies) only strong when it comes to ESN, and weak when it comes to Boko Haram, bandits and herdsmen?”

 

Also, Femi Fani-Kayode, says the killing of Ikonso was a “mistake” that could cost the nation dearly.

 

In series of tweets on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, Fani-Kayode lamented that the killing of the ESN Commander Ikonso was comparable to that of Mohammed Yusuf, whose killing has been blamed for the Boko Haram insurgency that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions in Nigeria since 2009.

 

The former minister stressed that the killing of the ESN Commander Ikonso could radicalise the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a pro-Biafra group seeking secession from Nigeria.

 

Fani-Kayode lamented that the killing portends grave danger for Nigeria that is still battling with the Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgency.

 

 

The former minister tweeted, “The biggest mistake that the Nigerian state has made since the killing of Mohammed Yusuf, the erstwhile leader of Boko Haram, is the killing of Ikonso the IPOB & ESN Commander a few days ago.

 

“This single act has radicalised IPOB & will have consequences. It is sad & unfortunate. We must pray for peace.”

Ikonso replaced; Govt. Building renamed

There were mourning accross Biafra Land after Ikonso’s killing.

 

No IPOB activist slept, last night because of Ikonso’s death. Yes… People are mourning and their heart bleeds.

Infants are denied Breast milk from their grieving Mothers, Father’s have their hand on cheeks as tears make an ocean, hearts pounding and emotions burning like a furnace.

Ikonso has however been replaced (immediately) with details of his replacement kept of lips and ear.

 

Powerful disclosed this on (a) Sunday during an interview on Channels TV Politics Today, he also refused to disclose the name of the new commander when asked to do so.

 

He said IPOB was still intact and that the Federal Government could say whatever it liked.

 

“They can say whatever they like, but we are intact. Another commander has taken over. I won’t tell you,” he said.

 

 

Finally, as a 24.4.2021 remembrance, the IPOB has named the Imo State Government House at Douglas road, Owerri, after Ikonso.

 

This was announced in a statement by Emma Powerful, who said Douglas Road Owerri and Awomamma Junction would also be named after the late Commander.

 

The statement explained that the decision which was with immediate effect, was one of the ways its members and Biafrans globally wished to immortalise the fallen leader and his men.

 

The statement reads: “We the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra and Biafrans worldwide, wish to announce to the world, our unanimous decision to rename the Imo State Government House, Douglas Road Owerri, and Awomamma Junction after the late heroic Commander of the Eastern Security Network Ikonso, murdered in cold blood by cowardly Nigeria security operatives.

 

“The affected places will henceforth be called Ikonso Government House, Ikonso Way and Ikonso Junction respectively.

 

This is with immediate effect and compliance is required of all ministries and parastatals beginning from today, the 28th day of April 2021.”

 

“This decision is one of the ways IPOB members and Biafrans all over the world have agreed to immortalize the name of our brave Ikonso and his men killed by the callous cowardly Nigeria security agents that flee from terrorists and bandits but derive pleasure in killing unarmed Biafra agitators.

 

”Ikonso and other fallen heroes with him did nothing to warrant their summary extra judicial execution. They made the supreme sacrifice in defence of our ancestral land against Fulani terrorists, jihadists and killer herdsmen. Biafra shall never forget them.

 

 

“We therefore expect maximum cooperation from relevant Government agencies, officials and the Imo State House of Assembly because we don’t know who this Douglas is that a road in Owerri was named but we know who Ikonso was.

 

“He defended Imo State with his life, for without him, most Imo indigenes would be in IDP camps by now courtesy of terrorists.”
