Nigerian Soldier, Obafemi Peter Adetayo, dead after allegedly shot by DSS

Over 48 hours after he was allegedly shot by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS), a Soldier identified as Obafemi Peter Adetayo, has died at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital in Lagos.

The Soldier was reportedly shot at the weekend along Elegushi Beach by unidentified operatives when he attempted to bring out his identity card from his pocket.

His death was announced on the social media by one of his relatives, who claimed he was shot in the stomach.

The deceased soldier’s relative also alleged that the DSS has already threatened his family to maintain silence on the incident.

He wrote: “I lost a brother today. He was a Soldier. No, Boko Haram didn’t kill him, Bandits didn’t. He didn’t die at the war front.

“He was shot in the stomach by DSS in Lekki when he attempted to bring out his ID card.

“Again, Nigeria failed its own. My God! He was so full of life. An amazing soul to the core. He was always smiling.

“I can’t process the fact that I won’t see him ever again. Living in Nigeria is equivalent to walking on a time bomb set to explode the next minute

“The DSS is threatening his elder brother to die (kill) the matter. He was in ICU but died today,” he wrote.

Late Nigerian Soldier, Obafemi Peter Adetayo

Confirming the soldier’s death, spokesman for the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Olaniyi Osoba said a joint investigation panel has been constituted to unravel what led to the shooting.

He said: “Yes, it is true that one of our soldiers was shot in a controversial circumstance around the Lekki general area. He was evacuated immediately for medical attention while a joint investigation is ongoing to ascertain what led to him being shot.

“Sadly we lost him this morning. Let me assure you that appropriate action would be taken at the end of the investigation.”
