THE ABURI ACCORD THAT WOULD HAVE SAVED NIGERIA

The land of the rising sun: Ojukwu did no wrong in preparing well for Aburi Accord – a comment

Permit me to respond to certain aspects of this post. I commend the poster who raised issues to me. Let me start by addressing the anthem issue which available information has that “ The land of the rising sun” was copied from a book by Dr BN Azikiwe “ Ode to Onitsha” while the tune is of a Finnish violinist Jean Sibelius No2/1899.

There’s no record that he(Zik)composed it for that purpose as insinuated pointedly.

Second point is Aburi where l have personally visited while going to Mampong in Ghana. Furthermore l have a copy of the verbatim report. The issues of discarding the report is rooted in the backgrounds of the 2 major actors. Ojukwu a graduate obviously was most prepared and with several memos in tow. The others weren’t as adept in their demands and positions as he was. There were agreements but at the end of course.

Note that even during the deliberations there were disagreements and a breakdown. It was Mr T Omobare(DIG)who was instrumental to bring them back on the table. It’s was viewed that too many concessions went to the East.

I don’t wish to give numbers in terms of casualties. The more deposit in your account the heavier the loss in case of a bank collapse. You’re right on those names on stallers of the report. It is also pertinent to mention that even after the death of A Bello the north was calm as even Hassan(1956) was still loyal to chukwumah(1957) it was the taunting of the north that instigated the backlash which saw to the attacks on any one not from the north. Therefore the issue of casualty is intricate.

These issues are before us once again and the only way forward is a dispassionate view across board in order for success. All have suffered truly from these events which atimes were not well thought through for best outcomes.

Is it evil to be well prepared for a meeting like aburi? Ojukwu did no wrong in preparing well for aburi.

Is it enough reason for any one to frustrate an international accord as gowon did?

Or is it enough reason to create new states as gowon did?

Was it igbo taunting that told northern officers that their emirs would be killed in the Ibadan meeting with ironsi?

Ask Jeremiah Husseni whether such stories were not some of the excuses for the murder of ironsi.

Or was Murtala Mohammed not already planning a coup and was openly confronted at the ikeja cantonment mess with his coup plot?

Remembering General Murtala Muhammed

Or was the taunting by igbo that caused the military, police and general populace of the north to rise up to murder igbo civilians wholesale?

Did igbo military kill northern civilians?

Was ojukwu wrong in insisting that order of seniority be followed in the army?

Hassan and Chukwuma were promoted by civilian authority but gowon acquired power by terror and there were more senior officers yet alive and ojukwu insisted that the most senior officer take over.

There is nothing wrong with that ojukwu’s position.

Gowon usurped power and also destroyed aburi accord. What is his responsibility in the evil that befell Nigeria since then?

However, these men were young people so they made the mistakes of the youth.

However, there is no human justification for the pogrom of igbo in july/august 1966 and again in 1967.
If northerners were taunted in January to july 1966, were they also taunted in 1967 to kill more igbo after th slaughter in 1966?

Incidentally the bulk of the pogrom was carried out by northern minorities and guess who is being expelled from their land now?

These events are unfortunate and should be in the past, but there is no excuse for the near genocide of igbo by northern nigerians, taunting or not.

The sought must come together now or the fulani will again have their way.

Even now many south and middle belt people are tools in the hands of fulani and any one could be deceived again.
