ONDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY – Belated Obedience

ONDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY - Belated Obedience

ONDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY: Let me take him through this route since he’s a pastor. And Samu el said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord ? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1st Samuel 15:22.

The Speaker of Ondo State House Of Assembly Rt. Honourable David Bamidele Oleyelogun – a law maker turned a law breaker, disobeyed voice of reason. He disobeyed the law of the land. Now, the chips are down he’s running helter skelter. It seems that those who pushed him to ignore court orders have left him in the cold.

The emergency reinstatement of the four members of the State House Of Assembly today- Monday 14th December,2020, by the leadership of the Ondo State House Of Assembly is belated . The Court has already fixed arrangement of the Speaker and others for 17th December.

It’s interesting to know that the judgements of Justice Ademola Bola of the state High Court was delivered in August.

Also, the Court of Appeal judgement by Justice Oyebisi Omoleye, which ordered the appellants to reinstate the four lawmakers, pay their salaries and the sum of N250,000 jointly and severally to the lawmakers, as damages was for immediate implementation. The judgement was delivered on 18th November, 2020.

Therefore, Mr Speaker can’t determine the day he will obey a lawful court order.

The Speaker did not obey any of the court order until form 48 and 49 were issued on him to show cause why he should not be imprisoned and the subsequent arrangement slated for 17th December.

The reinstatement is belated. Even if Mr Speaker pays the seven months salary of the four members, damages and the fine imposed today, it’s still belated.

By its nature, punishment for contempt is the exercise of the powers of the court to punish an offender for an act that somehow affects the dignity of the court in the administration of justice. It is an inherent power in that it is innate to the court once it is established. Essentially, it is invoked by the court to protect its dignity and majesty so that its orders are not trivialized or treated with levity.

Invariably, the arraignment of the contemnors on 17th December,2020, is sacrosanct.

Mr Speaker !
