The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr (Mrs) Ebelechukwu Obiano (Osodieme) has commended the people of Awka North and Njikoka Local Government Areas for coming out to support her humanitarian tour to the Council areas.
Mrs Obiano made the observation Wednesday, 14th October, when she visited the two council areas which forms part of her tour of the 21 local government areas of the state.
The tour which took her to Achalla and Abagana headquarters of the two Local Governments provided opportunity for the distribution of palliative support to indigent widows, the less privileged, the physically challenged persons and children from various communities.
The LGA annual tour which has become the routine of the wife of the Governor in the past six years, is also a platform to meet and interact with the people, especially grassroots women, on different socio-economic issues, including health, career development, empowerment, agriculture, social and community development.
Speaking at each of the two local government areas, Mrs Obiano said that she decided not to cancel the annual tour despite the COVID-19 pandemic because of the attendant economic difficulties faced by the people, especially the poor.
“Sincerely I don’t feel comfortable in the face of the prevailing hardship some of our brothers and sisters pass through for survival. Failing to turn-up to lend a hand in assuaging their pains is not in my character and that is why I braved the odds to come, knowing that this time is when we need each other the most.” Osodieme explained.
The governor’s wife, however noted that despite the freefall in the price of crude oil globally which took a toll on the economy of Nigeria and by extension Anambra State, that Governor Obiano’s prudent management of the state’s economy has helped to lift some of the burden off the shoulders of Ndi Anambra through such policies like tax relief, exemptions and support to small businesses. She also called for collective responsibility at all levels and support for one another.
Speaking variously at Achalla and Abagana, headquarters of Awka North and Njikoka1 and 11 Constituencies, Members representing the Constituencies in the State House of Assembly, Chief John Nwokoye, Hon Tim Ifedioranma, and Hon. Pete Ibida respectively, all agreed that the supportive role of the wife of the Governor is recognized by all and that the impact is felt mostly by the needy which has contributed immensely to the success of the Obiano administration.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Children and Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, welcomed Osodieme on behalf of the beneficiaries of the palliative support, while the Commissioner for Youth Entrepreneurship and Creative Economy, Prof.Theresa Obiekezie, thanked Mrs Obiano for setting a good example through her charity programmes that would be recorded by posterity.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Chief Chikodi Anara equally commended Mrs Obiano for defying the weather to visit the communities and improve the welfare of others. He prayed that God will continue to reward her for the good things she is doing. While the Special Adviser to the Governor on Innovative Security and MD/CEO, Anambra Fire Service, Rtd. Air Vice Marshall Ben Chiobi, praised Osodieme’s doggedness and consistent approach to charity and urged her to extend the appreciation of all the political appointees in the area to her husband, the Governor.
Also on hand to commend the effort of the First Lady was Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi who is the Special Adviser on Health/ CEO Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA). He said the Governor and his wife are reaping rewards of years of service to mankind.
The Awka North Local Government Area, Transition Committee Chairman, Mr. Ferdinand Onwuje who had earlier welcomed the First Lady, said that her annual tour fulfills an important social need of the people while his counterpart at Njikoka, Chief George Ozo, was emphatic that the annual humanitarian gesture has made tremendous positive impact on the beneficiaries.
