The Supreme Court have upheld, Gboyega Oyetola, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the governor of Osun state in its ruling on Friday, 5th July.
The case started after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Oyetola winner of the Osun governorship election after a controversial rerun in September 2018. Dissatisfied with INEC’s declaration, Ademola Adeleke, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, filed a petition against at the tribunal.
The tribunal declared Adeleke winner of the election in March. Gboyega appealed the verdict of the tribunal, but then in May, the appeal court gave judgement in favour of the APC candidate.
At the ruling on Friday, a seven-man panel led by Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivor gave a split decision with five Justices confirming Oyetola while two consented for Ademola Adeleke.
Delivering the ruling, Justice Rhodes-Vivour dismissed Adeleke’s application and confirmed Oyetola as the rightful winner of the election.
Meanwhile, following the ruling members of the PDP have taken turn to feel with Adeleke. One of the key persons is Atiku Abubakar, Presidential candidate of the 2019 General election who’s case is also on.
He tweets, “I extend my right hand of brotherhood to Senator Adeleke in all his future endeavours and I assure the good people of the state of Osun that the Peoples Democratic Party remembers their love and acceptance and will never forget to stand by them no matter the situation.”
