Parental guardian, antidotes to wrong use of social media

Parental guardian has been identified as the only way to discourage the school age children from sourcing the social media wrongly which has led to a lot of social vices, such as; kidnapping, cultism, rapping, robbery among others.

 

The Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu said this during the seminar titled; “21st Century Parenting and Education” put in place by the Old Girls Association (92 Set) of Abeokuta Girls Grammar School, Onikolobo, Abeokuta, noting that technology has come to stay in this generation and the only way to curb its misuse was through adequate censorship.

Prof. Arigbabu stated that the advent of technology had exposed the new generation to so many opportunities such usage of google App for various research works and methodology, enjoining teachers to ensure proper monitoring of phone, rather than discouraging students from using it.

 

“Government, parents and teachers must ensure that children make good use of technology. Whether we like it or not technology has come to stay with us and there is nothing we can do about it than to ensure proper use”, Arigbabu said.

 

He noted that method of teaching and learning in schools was made easy with the use of technology, assuring that government was working to put in place mechanism that would ensure its positive usage among learners.

 

The speaker, Mr. Biodun Makinde, in his keynote address, enjoined learners to always make a right decision, saying their choices determines what they do in life.

 

Mr. Makinde said teachers in 21st century need to step up their games by ensuring self motivation and development, adding that upbringing of children was a collective responsibility.

 

Earlier, the Commissioner while receiving the Old Girls Association ’92 set led by the President, Mrs. Toyin Yusuff in his office at Oke-mosan appreciated the association for organising a programme that could bring sanity into the lives of the youths.

 

Speaking, the President of the Set, Mrs. Yusuff posited that the aim of organising the programme was to sensitise students to explore the internet for their academic growth and to encourage the parents and caregivers to take up responsibilities on their wards.
