Poor State of Roads in Nigeria: Ekwunife calls on FERMA, Works Ministry

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Uche Ekwunife has called on the Federal Ministry of Works through the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to address the terrible state of roads in the country.

She said this during the Senate plenary of Tuesday, 14th of July, while speaking through Order 43 of the Senate rules.

Senator Ekwunife narrated her recent ordeal between Otukpo and Enugu where she spent more than six hours due to the poor state of the road.

She stated that with the lifting of the interstate travel ban, the volume of traffic on the highways is already increasing – a situation that calls for urgent maintenance repairs of these very deplorable roads.

According to Ekwunife, highway robbers and kidnappers have turned most of these bad portions of the road to criminal hot spots, while several of those portions have also become prone to fatal accidents especially at nights.

“The urgent repair works on these roads therefore will remain the best palliative Nigerian will get from Government.” She added.

Concluding, the Lawmaker highlighted roads such as Enugu-Onitsha highway, Okene-Ekiti highway, Lokoja-Ajaokuta highway Aba-Port Harcourt highway, Ikot Ekpene -Aba highway, Kogi-Enugu highway, Enugu-Umuahia, Abuja-Kaduna highway, Ikot Ekpene-Calabar highway, Lagos-Ibadan highway among many other interstate highways scattered all over the country as some of the roads begging for urgent maintenance works.

Senator Uche Ekwunife prayed the Senate to bring the attention of FERMA on the need to improve the state of the roads mentioned and other important roads across the country.
