Johnny Nash, American singer-songwriter best known for ‘I Can See Clearly Now’, has passed on at 80.
The late singer’s son announced that he died from natural causes in his home at Houston on Tuesday.
Nash began his career as a pop singer in the 1950’s. In the 1960’s, Nash and Danny Sims formed JAD Records, and while living in Jamaica, the pair signed Bob Marley and other members of the group ‘The Wailers’.
‘I Can See Clearly Now’, his 1972 hit single, sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA in November that same year, where it remained for four weeks.
He also had a number one hit in the UK in 1975 with ‘Tears on My Pillow’.
Johnny Nash also sang the opening theme song for cartoon series ‘The Mighty Hercules,’ which aired in the 1960’s.
He is said to be one of the first non-Jamaican singers to record reggae music in Kingston, Jamaica.
Nash was also an actor and producer, and appeared in roles like ‘Take a Giant Step’ (1959), ‘Key Witness’ (1960) and ‘Love Is Not a Game’ (1971).
