Senator Uche Ekwunife speaks on Multiple Checkpoints at Eastern Nigeria

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Uche Ekwunife stated that the incessant establishment of security checkpoints on Nigerian roads, particularly the roads in the Southeast is frustrating commuters.

Senator Uche Ekwunife said that the countless number of security checkpoints on Nigerian roads are frustrating commuters.

She said this on Thursday while supporting a motion seeking to address the incessant establishment of security checkpoints on Nigerian roads.

Narrating her personal ordeal, Ekwunife stated that the number of checkpoints within Awka-Enugu, Awka-Onitsha and Onitsha-Owerri expressways are numerous and unnecessary.

“The frustrating thing is that these checkpoints have not abated the rising security challenges in the southeast or the localities where these checkpoints are established”.

Commending her colleague Senator Chukwuma Utazi on the motion, Ekwunife stated that even with the checkpoints, kidnappings still happen very close to these checkpoints.

She called on the Senate to urge the heads of the various security agencies to withdraw some of these checkpoints in order to ease the mobility of commuters on the highway.
