‘My husband and his friends refer to me by a nickname but he won’t tell me what it means’

A woman who discovered her husband and his friends refer to her by a nickname in their group chat says he panicked and refused to explain what it means when she questioned him.

She says that her phone had died while she was messaging her mum about something important, so she asked her husband if she could borrow his phone instead.

While she was using it, a message notification came up at the top of the screen from one of his friends in their group chat asking: “Do you and ST still want to do the Halloween plans?”

Confused as her initials are not ST, she looked at the chat and said by the context of the previous messages she was able to confirm that ST referred to her.

She says that ST is not an abbreviation of her name or anything she would go by, and none of her friends or family call her by anything other than her real name.

“So I was confused,” she wrote. “I showed him the chat and asked what it stood for.

“He looked suddenly really flustered. He grabbed his phone back and said ‘oh uhh it’s nothing, just a nickname’.

“Okay? Well what’s it stand for? He literally wouldn’t tell me, he just kept saying ‘don’t worry about it’. Well is there some reason I would need to worry? I wouldn’t be worrying if he just explained what it meant.

“I was a little put off by this, to find out all his friends are calling me something I don’t even know about? I told him even if it’s just some dumb joke at least tell me. Because clamming up just makes it look kind of weird.

“He still refused to tell me. This entire back and forth was maybe a minute or two. Then, he suddenly goes, ‘Okay fine it’s Super Terrific’.

“Look, I can’t tell if I’m being crazy but I just don’t fully buy that? If that’s all it was, why not say so the first time I asked? I asked like 3 or 4 times for him to tell me what it stood for. Why keep avoiding it?”

She explained that she didn’t want to look paranoid or accuse him of lying, but not knowing is still bothering her and she doesn’t believe it really stands for ‘super terrific’.

ST: ‘My husband and his friends refer to me by a nickname

After asking for advice on Reddit, people flooded forward with their own guesses, ranging from sexually suggestive names to harsh insults.

One replied to say: “It’s something inappropriate otherwise he would have told you what it was. It is not okay.”

A second wrote: “He 100% lied and now I wanna know what the nickname truly means too.”

And some told her to go digging for the truth, advising: “Time to group chat with the other wives.”

Another suggested putting his friends on the spot instead, adding: “I wouldn’t buy it either. If he won’t tell you, call someone on the group text.”

  • I don't think it's anything negative. No sane guy would call and allow his wife not gf a negative alas in a group chat or anywhere. I am certain that the name is the group name given to a wife. I know a group with special common names for wives and women

She should trust her husband enough to drop the matter and move on
