Stop using feminism to justify your wickedness – Chimamanda Adichie

Renowned Nigerian Writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has been a trending topic on micro-blogging website, Twitter, after an old video of her talking about using feminism to justify wickedness was shown .

She said in the video: “I often say to young Nigerian feminists, please do not use feminism to justify your wickedness.

“So you have some of these young women and I’m talking to them and they sound really mean and I say, you know what, this isn’t feminism, you’re just really nasty.”

Below are some reactions from Twitter:

“The Queen of modern day feminism, Chimamanda Adichie said that these days a lot of Nigerian women hide under the umbrella of feminism to be nasty & mean. If that ain’t the Gospel Truth!”

Every time I listen to Chimamanda Adichie, I feel convinced she is just holding on to the Feminist label. Egalitarianism fits her to a tee. If she was the sole voice of Feminism, everyone would listen. Every other acclaimed Feminist sounds like an irredeemable idiot.

Aim wrote –

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie called Nigerian Feminist “Wicked”, “Mean” and “Nasty” in this 18 seconds video. Wicked, Mean and Nasty is a byproduct of Angry, Bitter and Raging Feminist.

Cyndi wrote –

Thank you!!! Some people think Feminism involves hating Men

Adaeze wrote –

Most women need to even check the meaning of feminism.

Other Interesting Comments:

Chimamanda has told her daughters to stop hiding their wickedness with feminism. Unfortunately, they cannot bark at their mother. They’ll just have to swallow the admonition with mountain dew or sprite.

I could remember how we were branded “Angry Daughters of Chimamanda” on Facebook around 2016-2017. But now, all of a sudden, Nigerian men like her and her brand of feminism. Again, decenter men and their feelings.

If you are nasty, you are nasty.
Activism won’t cover your nastiness.

Chimamanda is totally right.
A nasty person with absolutely no decency and home training will remain nasty, indecent and lacking in decorum.

Again, please fix your lives.
Activism won’t hide your nastiness.

it’s high time people moved on from chimamanda as the default feminist icon.
she exists as a starting block to one’s journey but her activism has always seemed shallow and basic and doesn’t even make room for deeper discourse.
