Texas Tech announces LGBT leadership and service scholarship

The Office of LGBTQIA Education and Engagement at Texas Tech University announced it will award a $500 scholarship for LGBT leadership and service.

The award will be imparted as a one-time payment, and two will be awarded each semester, according to the site.

“The LGBTQIA Leadership/Service Scholarship is awarded to Texas Tech University undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate outstanding leadership in the LGBTQIA community,” the office’s website stated.

“Students are eligible to receive the scholarship multiple semesters but are ineligible to do so for two consecutive semesters,” the website read.

Minimum qualifications for applicants to apply for the award include being a full-time student at the university, having a cumulative 2.50 GPA, answering a few questions in writing, and providing a resume and two references, the office stated.

Applicants must “Identify and briefly describe your leadership responsibilities, activities, community service, and honors received during your high school or college career” in the short answer portion of the application, the website said.

Experiences must be confined to the past four years, according to the site.

The essay questions require that students “Describe a situation in which you demonstrated leadership in matters particularly relevant to the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) people,” the qualifications stated.

Students must also distinguish their leadership abilities from the other applicants and state how the scholarship will help them fulfill their professional and academic aims, the website noted.

Stephen Chao, the office administrator, told the Washington Examiner students could learn more about the award on the office’s website and expressed his excitement about the opportunity it provides.

“We are very excited to be able to offer the scholarship for campus leaders supporting LGBTQIA at Texas Tech,” Chao said.
