The non-talked-about ways of contracting Coronavirus

The non-talked-about ways of contracting Coronavirus – – “If the golden rule of the covid-19 infection, is ‘though shall not touch’, then with the new face masks policy of government, I hope a lot of Nigerians won’t begin to infect themselves through the fixing of the face masks and readjusting and readjusting it with their ‘contaminated’ hands, when it starts becoming itching and irritating on their faces.

Let me use myself to drive home the point. I was using the face mask at the earlier days of the lock down, but I discovered that by the time it spends about 10 minutes on me, my face would start sweating, itching and my whole facial environment would start becoming unbearably irritating, so I would have to keep removing it to mop up my face and scratching it to get comfort. Hence, eventually, I would end up removing it, especially when the heat is too much and the facial discomfort becomes unbearable.

Nigeria is not a cold temperate country like it is in the West. The temperature of the environment here is high. By the time people start wearing face masks in the sun and they start sweating on the face, it then becomes itching and irritating and in the process of removing it to mop up the sweat or scratching their itching faces, I hope this won’t be a counter productive measures at curbing the wide spread of the infection at the end of the day.

Or how many people in our grassroot communities would be cognisant of washing and washing their hands or sanitizing them regularly, before readjusting the masks on their faces or scratching those faces, when it becomes itching due to heat irritations?!

I think the government should also look into this. More and more Nigerians need to be properly educated on the use of the face masks, before the policy comes into full lawfully biding enforcement.

As far as I am concerned, people who use face masks can still end up infecting themselves, if there is no proper self and individual cognizance on strict personal hygiene and good social education on combining personal sanitation hygiene with the use of the face masks.

If one is not careful, one could still be using the face masks and still get infected.

Most of the people, who have been infected around the world also know about the use of face masks. Many were using it religiously, but at the end of the day, they still got infected from unconsciously touching infected surfaces; their faces and things.

Or will anybody tell me that the Late Abba Kyari, the former Chief of Staff to the President of Nigeria, wasn’t clean, stayed safe or careful enough before he got infected?! He must have got infected through an unconscious and an unoblivious source!

If you must continue to use the face mask, therefore, you must equally always make sure your hands are not infected or you must regularly wash and sanitize your hands, before you use them to scratch your face or keep adjusting your face mask, when it becomes irritating or burdensome in the sun or when the weather is hot.

A face on the mask or a mask on the face, but with infected hands can still knowingly or unknowingly make anyone a victim of the coronavirus infection.

Even as we all must now continue to use the face mask, it must still continue to be with clean and regularly washed hands. Or else, it could still be a counter productive strategy to the containment of the spread of the deadly global pandemic in our environments.

Face mask on the face and with regularly washed or sanitized hands is the right deal.

But, above all, remember the golden rule:

AVOID TOUCHING THINGS INDISCRIMINATELY. AND IF YOU MUST, WASH OR SANITISE YOUR HANDS IMMEDIATELY.

Please, take note!

Coronavirus is real. It has infected about 3 million people worldwide and has killed more than 200 thousand among them. You don’t need to be a victim of coronavirus to learn, neither do you need to be a victim of coronavirus to believe it’s real.

Your face mask could still be a tool to making you a victim.

Beware!

Olukayode Salako.
