Uber driver accuses MMA Police of theft and illegal arrest

A human rights organization, the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice(CHRSJ) has uncovered another criminal way being used by the men of Nigeria Police attached to the Muritala Muhammed Airport Two (MMA2) in collaboration with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Task Force to extort the Huber driver in Lagos.

 

The group, in a signed statement by its Executive Chairman, Comrade Adeniyi, Alimi Sulaiman and copies were made available to newsmen on Sunday, disclosed that the drivers plying the Airport route, have been facing series of crisis ranging from illegal arrest, extortion, illegal seizure of vehicles and host of others, from the security agents, particularly, the Police and FAAN Task Force in the area.

A Huber driver and a victim of the recent Airport Police and FAAN Task Force illegal attack, arrest and detention, Mr. Inaughe Nicholas, explained how he was maltreated and assaulted by the MMA2 Police officers led by Inspector Salau with phone number:-07082249331 and Inspector Fedilia with phone number:- 08038237521.

 

Mr. Nicholas (Uber driver) added that the FAAN Task Force led by Bolaji and Coaches,orchestrated his illegal arrest and detention by the Police.

 

Reporting the matter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) through its Executive Secretary in a letter received by the Commission on 23rd December, 2019, Nicholas who hailed from Edo State, stated that he dropped a passenger and received a call from another customer who called him(Nicholas) to come and pick him.

 

On his way to pick the said customer (passenger), the Task Force stopped him after the exit of the second gate of the MMA2 and started beaten him without knowing his offence where he sustained several body injuries and later seized his vehicle by detaining it at Task Force office in the area since then.

 

Nicholas who resides at No 26 Ibowon Town Mojoda, Epe in Eredo Local Government area of Lagos State , stressed that the aforementioned Police officers had used one Bank Account with Account Number:-0167787623-Stanbic IBTC-Paul Edoka on Saturday 21st December,2019 to collect sum of N5,200money from im(Nicholas), after they had earlier collected sum of N13,500 from him as payment for bail.

 

To get the matter worse, the FAAN Task Force demanded sum of N150, 000 from him (Nicholas) before his vehicle would be released.

 

Speaking further on the matter,Comrade Sulaiman urged the FAAN Task Force to release the said vehicle unconditionally to Nicholas because the vehicle was not owned by Nicholas but belonging to one Mr. Oluwatobi Banjoko Gabriel of Sangotedo United Estate in Lagos.

 

He added that the Nicholas who is the complainant in this matter,was just employed by Gabriel as driver of the vehicle seized illegally by FAAN Task Force,adding that Adroid Product of Infinix Hot 8 worth of N45,000, were also seized from his(Nicholas) hand by the Task Force.

Sulaiman who doubles as Convener,Save Lagos Group (SLG), submitted that the vehicle was the only source of means of livelihood to the poor Uber driver, Nicholas and his family, adding that failure by the Task Force to release the car to Nicholas and as well pay his medical bill, might make the group ( CHRSJ) to seek
redress through democratic and legal means available.
