UPDATE ON THE ARREST OF A UNIBEN STUDENT

The Golden Age Executives ably led by Comr. Egwu Benjamin Lotanna, brings greetings to all and sundry.

The notice of the Union has been brought to the case of our student who has been apprehended on June 5th, 2020; detained in relation to an incriminating Facebook comment made in connection with the rape case of Late Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa. The student was identified as, Sunday Theodore Awoh, a 300 level student from the department of Educational foundation, Faculty of Education.

From the report gotten by the Union, the case of his arrest and detention has been said to be on basis of resemblance with one Livinus Elem, the user who in actuality made the Facebook comment. The Union swung into rapid action on getting this report and today, June 24th, 2020, in company of the Senate President of the 34th Assembly and the President of Nigerian Universities of Education Students Association (NUESA), proceeded to the Edo State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to get proper briefing on the case.

On our arrival at the State CID, the Union met with Mr. Chidi Nwabuzor, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO).

The PPRO stated that there is no cause for alarm; he equally said that upon investigations which already ongoing Sunday Theodore will be released if found to be innocent, and If found guilty will be charged to court. He also advised, that Sunday Theodore Awoh has not been pronounced guilty and the reason for his transfer, is for proximity sake, so as to aid the investigations; since the whole case has since been transferred to Federal level.

We therefore use this medium, to inform the University Community, that the Union is keenly interested in this case and we are in contacts with the necessary authorities. Inasmuch as we want Justice to be achieved for late Miss Vera Uwaila, it must be achieved judiciously. Importantly, we urge every student to include Sunday Theodore Awoh in their prayers; also pray for the entire University Community.
