The UK can expect ‘no special deals’ from Joe Biden if he wins the election, a former Foreign Office under-secretary has said.
Peter Ricketts claimed the Democrat was ‘no fan of Brexit’ and would be ‘tough on trade deals’ with the UK.
He added: “We can’t expect any special deals from the Biden administration but the whole tone and style will be much more constructive.”
Meanwhile, former foreign secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind has said Downing Street may be relieved if Donald Trump loses the election and said he disagreed with some of the comparisons of Mr Trump and Boris Johnson.
He told Times Radio: “It’s often said that Boris Johnson and Donald Trump are blood brothers. No. I think that’s a rather silly exaggeration.
“Yes, they both have a shock of white hair, yes they both use populist rhetoric and can be accused of having a rather unusual private life but there the similarity comes to an end.
“I suspect 10 Downing Street, although it will never say this, will actually also be slightly relieved that he’ll be dealing with an American president who’ll be predictable, who will not tweet policy when he wakes up in the morning and who will therefore be able to be part of a coherent approach to the issues that we’ll face in government.”
Moreover, Boris Johnson said he would “work closely with whoever” wins the US election.
During a visit to the East Midlands, the Prime Minister told reporters: “If I were a voter in America I don’t think I’d want anybody in another government commenting on my election.
“I think while the votes are counted, we should wait and see. And I have every confidence in the checks and balances of the American constitution.”
Asked if he would miss his ally Donald Trump, Mr Johnson said: “The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is always going to work closely with whoever is the President of the United States.
“That’s going to be the case whatever the outcome of this election.
“I don’t think at this stage you’d expect any foreign international leader to comment on the democratic processes of a very friendly country, that’s just not what we do.”
Joe Biden is likely be the 46th President of the United States as he looked certain to deny Donald Trump a second term in the White House.
But he wouldn’t take over straight away.
The President-elect has to wait until January to take the oath of office at the huge inauguration.

Interesting post and I don't think the UK can relay too heavily on America regardless off the election outcome (though thank god it looks like Biden will definitely win now).
